Sugarcane crushing for 2024-25 fiscal year is set to begin at Darshana Carew & Company Sugar Mill on Friday afternoon setting a target of manufacturing 4,200 tonnes of sugar.
Dr. Lipika Bhadra, Chairman of Bangla Sugar and Food Industries Corporation, will be the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony, said Rabbik Hasan, managing director (MD) of Carew & Co.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahirul Islam and Superintendent of Police Khandaker Golam Maula will attend as special guests.
Rabbik Hasan mentioned that slow-firing of the boiler was completed on December 6, marking the start of the 2024-25 sugarcane threshing season.
He highlighted steps taken to reduce the sugar mill's losses and boost profitability, with a focus on improving sugarcane planting and providing better support for farmers. Ongoing meetings aim to encourage more farmers to cultivate sugarcane.
He urged farmers to increase yields and profits by using a spade to cut sugarcane from the root, instead of a hoe or sickle.
According to mill sources, the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Corporation aims to produce 4,200 metric tons of sugar by processing 70,000 metric tons of sugarcane over 65 threshing days.
The average threshing rate is set at 1,150 metric tons, with a sugar extraction rate of 6 percent.
This season, sugarcane is being cultivated on 5,100 acres, including 3,455 acres on farmers' land and 1,645 acres on Carew's own land.
