A tourist died after falling into the sea while parasailing at the Sea Sports Parasailing Point in the Dariyanagar area along Cox's Bazar's Marine Drive on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Shouvik Roy, a resident of Khulna district. He had travelled to Cox's Bazar with a tour group.

Sheikh Mohammad Ali, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, said the accident occurred at around 12:30 pm in the Dariyanagar beach area.

Subaktagin Mohammad Sahel, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, said Shouvik was brought to the hospital at around 2:10 pm but had died before arrival.

"Initially, it is believed that he died after falling into the sea. However, the exact cause of death will be known after the autopsy report is received," he said.

Mahmudul Hasan, Executive Magistrate of the District Administration's Tourism Cell, said the tourist was critically injured after falling into the sea while parasailing. He was rescued and taken to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The body has been kept at the hospital morgue, and necessary legal procedures are underway, he added.

Meanwhile, locals alleged that although parasailing has operated in Cox's Bazar for years, questions remain over safety measures. They said previous accidents involving the same operator had sparked nationwide concern, but effective steps to improve safety or hold those responsible accountable had not been taken.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mannan said no permission had been granted to operate parasailing on the beach.

"They are operating parasailing illegally. Despite being evicted several times, they have continued the operation secretly. Necessary action will be taken against the operators," he said.
