A tourist went missing after being swept away by the strong current of the Dhalai River while bathing at the popular Bholaganj Sadapathor tourist spot in Companiganj upazila of Sylhet on Thursday afternoon.
The missing tourist was identified as Dr Subrata Saha Bikash, 33, son of Mihir Lal Saha of Ramgati upazila in Lakshmipur district.
According to eyewitnesses and police, Subrata and three friends had travelled from Dhaka to visit several tourist attractions in Sylhet. As part of their trip, they visited Bholaganj Sadapathor .
Around 2:30 pm, three members of the group entered the Dhalai River near the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) camp for a bath. While swimming, they were caught in the river's strong current. Two of them managed to swim back to safety, but Subrata was swept away and disappeared beneath the water.
On receiving the information, members of the Tourist Police and local administration rushed to the scene. Divers from the Companiganj Fire Service Station immediately launched a rescue operation.
Inspector Abdul Kaiyum, in-charge of the Bholaganj Tourist Police outpost said rescue efforts began as soon as authorities were informed.
He said Fire Service divers were continuing the search despite difficulties caused by the strong river current.
As of 6:00 pm, the missing tourist had not been found, he added.
