Transport for London (TfL) will provide support to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to improve the traffic system of Dhaka.
DNCC Administrator Md. Mahmudul Hasan said this after British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke paid a courtesy call on him at the latter’s office in Dhaka’s Gulshan on Monday.
The TfL will provide the DNCC with technical support in network management, bus operation and safety in improving the traffic management, he said.
It will initiate their operation at Gulshan-1 to 2 as a test run.
A delegation of the TfL inspected the traffic management of Gulshan in July, the administrator said.
He said by exchanging knowledge and experience with the TfL, the city corporation can establish a modern transport system in Dhaka.
“The experience of London's bus franchise model and traffic signal systems will be invaluable to us. Based on the results of the pilot project in Gulshan, we will develop a comprehensive plan for the entire transport system in Dhaka,” he said.
The administrator said the DNCC will take integrated activities with other stakeholders to modernise Dhaka's transport system.
A Memorandum of Understanding was inked between the DNCC and UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to modernise the transport system, improve traffic signals, and alleviate traffic congestion in the DNCC area in November last year.
DNCC's Chief Executive Officer Mir Khairul Alam, Chief Engineer Brig. Gen. Mohammad Moin Uddin and Additional Chief Engineer Mohammad Arifur Rahman were, among others, present at the meeting.
