Four people including twin siblings drowned in Munshiganj and Chapainawabganj districts on Sunday.

In Munshiganj, eight-year-old twin siblings drowned in a pond near their maternal grandparents’ home in Sirajdikhan upazila.

The deceased were Tanisha and Raihan, children of Sharif Miah, a Kuwait expatriate. Their family resides in the Demra area of Dhaka.

Their maternal grandfather, Kashem Miah, said the children had arrived at his home in Chashimuddin village on Saturday.

At around 1:30pm on Sunday, the siblings went to play near a pond close to the house.

At one point, one of them fell into the pond. The other tried to save the sibling, but both eventually drowned.

Locals later rescued the children and took them to a nearby hospital.

As their condition worsened, they were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared them dead at around 3:30pm.

Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, said the bodies have been kept at the hospital morgue and the concerned police station had been informed.

In another incident in Chapainawabganj, two teenagers drowned while bathing in the Mahananda River in Diar Dhainagar area of Gobratala Union under Sadar upazila on Sunday.

The deceased were Sujan, 18, son of Abdur Rahim, and Ahmed, 19, son of Subahan. Both were from the Mahipur Bhatopara area.

Ekramul Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station, said Sujan and Ahmed drowned while bathing in the river at around 1:45pm.

Locals later recovered their bodies, he added.
