Two children drowned in a pond in Brahmanpara upazila of Cumilla on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Mo Hasibul, 8, and Mo Junaid, 11.
Hasibul was the son of Md Kawsar of Icha Muddir village in the Gopalnagar area while Junaid was the son of Md Halim. He was originally from Ramnagar. However, Junaid had been living at his aunt's house in Gopalnagar. He was a Class IV student at Gopalnagar Uttarpara Government Primary School.
Locals said the two children fell into a pond near a house around 12:30pm. They were later rescued and taken to Brahmanpara Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead after examination.
Dr Redwan Ahmed Himel, medical officer at Brahmanpara Upazila Health Complex, said the two children had died before they were brought to the hospital.
The bodies were later handed over to their families after completing the necessary formalities, he added.
The deaths of the two children cast a pall of grief over their families, neighbours and local residents.
