Two siblings tragically drowned in a newly excavated pond near their house at Ishwarpara village in Lalpur upazila of Natore district on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Sohangi Khatun Atiyara,9, and her six-year-old brother Abu Bakkar, children of local farmer Atikul Islam of Ishwarpara village under Chongdhupoil union.
According to locals, the siblings were playing with mud on the bank of the newly dug pond near their home around 4pm. Bakkar slipped and fell into the water while attempting to gather mud. Trying to rescue her younger brother, Atiyara jumped into the pond, but both sank underwater.
Family members launched a search and eventually spotted their bodies floating in the pond. They rescued them and rushed them to the Lalpur Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty physicians declared both dead.
Shafiqul Islam, Lalpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC), said police prepared the inquest report and filed an unnatural death (UD) case before handing the bodies over to the family.
