The bodies of two teenage boys were recovered from the Padma River in Chapainawabganj on Tuesday evening, hours after they went missing while bathing with friends.
The deceased were identified as Rifat, 16, son of Jem Ali of Rauf Hajipara in Sundarpur, and Rasel, 17, son of Alam Hossain of Char Tero Roshia area in Islampur. Both were Class X students.
The bodies were recovered near Alimnagar Ghat in Sadar upazila, said Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Model Police Station Ekramul Hossain.
According to local sources, the incident occurred around 12:30pm when a group of friends went to bathe in the river at Alimnagar Ghat. Rifat and Rasel drowned during the bathing.
Local residents immediately launched a rescue effort and informed the Fire Service. Divers later joined the operation and recovered the bodies after several hours of search.
The bodies were handed over to their families after legal formalities, police said.
In a separate incident on the same day, a young man went missing in the Mahananda River while fishing.
Sakirul, 28, son of Ruhul Amin of Arambagh area, reportedly fell into the river while casting a fishing net near the rubber dam in Chapainawabganj municipality in the afternoon.
OC Ekramul Hossain said the search for Sakirul was still underway, with Fire Service divers and local volunteers continuing rescue efforts.
