A van driver was allegedly beaten to death following a trivial dispute in Mohanpur upazila of Rajshahi on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Alam Ali, 43, son of Md Ashraf, a resident of Belgachhi village in the upazila.
The incident occurred around 8:30 am in front of Pathak Club in the East Para area of Belgachhi.
According to local sources, the accused, Mojibur Rahman, signalled a moving van to stop. However, when the driver stopped the vehicle a short distance ahead, Mojibur became enraged.
At one stage, he allegedly struck Alam several times on the back of the head with a brick.
Alam sustained critical injuries and collapsed on the ground. Locals rushed him to Mohanpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Following the incident, locals detained the accused at Pathak Club.
When police arrived to take him into custody, an agitated crowd attempted to assault him.
During efforts to control the situation, Assistant Sub-Inspector Belal Uddin and another police member sustained minor injuries.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
Second Officer of Mohanpur Police Station, SI Modasser Hossain Khan, said legal action is being taken based on complaints filed over the incident.
