A suspected Yaba trader was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) along the Naf River in Teknaf upazila early Tuesday
The deceased was identified as Imam Hossain, 25, son of Abdus Salam of Hinla Jadimura in the upazila.
Tipped off, a team of BGB Battalion-2 conducted a drive in the area and challenged a group of Yaba traders while crossing the river, said Lt Col Faisal Hasib Khan, commanding officer of the battalion.
Sensing danger, the criminals opened fire on BGB, forcing them to fire back, triggering a gunfight, he said, adding that Imam was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries while others managed to flee the scene.
Later, he was taken to local hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The BGB also recovered 1.20 lakh Yaba tablets, two guns, two cartridges and a sharp weapon from the spot.
