Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam has said that the young generation wants to establish a merit-based and professional bureaucracy.

On Sunday (February 2), the Adviser made this remark while speaking at the 77th foundation training course for BCS cadre officers at the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre in Savar.

He said, "The bureaucracy in Bangladesh had been used for political purposes at previous time. In many cases, government officials were promoted based on political considerations, which was very unfortunate. It is time to move away from this situation. Therefore, institutionalization of the bureaucracy is necessary."

Nahid Islam emphasized that government jobs should involve promotions based on merit, and there is also a need to reform the performance evaluation system for government employees.

Regarding state reforms, the Adviser said the government aims to lay the foundation for state reforms. To this end, the government has formed various reform commissions. He also mentioned that based on the reports of these reform commissions, reforms will be initiated through discussions with political parties. He further added that without reforms, there will be no qualitative change in the state during elections.

During the session led by the Information Adviser, Saeed Mahbub Khan, Rector of the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre, and officials from the centre were present. The session was attended by 605 officers from 22 cadres of the 77th foundation training course.
