A young woman was allegedly gang-raped after being confined for 13 days at a house along the Kanaighat border in Sylhet after she was pushed back into Bangladesh from India.

Police arrested Naim Uddin, 22, son of Abdur Rahman Dalu of Dana Pattipara village in Kanaighat upazila, on Wednesday in connection with a case filed over the incident, said Kanaighat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aminul Islam.

According to the case and police, the woman, 20, a resident of Sherpur district, entered India illegally through the Satkhira border about nine months ago and was engaged in clothing business in Hyderabad.

On August 20, she was arrested by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) while trying to return to Bangladesh with the help of a relative named Jahangir.

On humanitarian grounds, the BSF did not send her to jail and instead pushed her back into Bangladesh through the Dana border in Kanaighat, locals said.

After crossing the border, six young men, including Shanur Ahmed, Naim Uddin and Kawsar, allegedly lured her with promises of helping her reach home and abducted her.

They then took her to Shanur’s house and confined her there for 13 days, where they allegedly gang-raped her.

With the help of local Union Parishad Member Nazim Uddin, the woman managed to escape from the confinement on Wednesday and filed a case with Kanaighat Police Station.

Police immediately launched an operation and arrested Naim, the OC said.

The woman was also admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for examination, he said, adding that they were conducting drives to arrest the other accused.
