Police detained the youth who went viral after publicly beating two girls from a picnic party on a launch at Munshiganj Launch Ghat.
Police said they detained Nehal Ahmed Jihad for questioning around 1:30 pm on Saturday. Nehal is the son of Monir Hossain of Jogni Ghat in Munshiganj town.
M Saiful Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station, said no one has filed a complaint with the police station yet.
"We will take further action if we receive a complaint," he added.
On Friday evening, around 7:30 pm, a launch named MV Captain, along with 300/400 people from a picnic in South Keraniganj, anchored at the Munshiganj Launch Ghat. After getting off the launch, a few people went to the ghat area to buy snacks, where a brawl broke out over bad comments being made against them.
Later, around 50 local people boarded the launch, beat up the people from the picnic and carried out vandalism.
At one point, two women were brought in front of the launch and beaten up in public. Later, the police and the army went there and controlled the situation.
OC Saiful Alam said that they went to the spot immediately after hearing the incident.
The passengers who attended the picnic and the launch staff said they would file a lawsuit. The picnic attendees reported that the attackers had taken their cell phones and cash.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) strongly demanded proper safety measures for the victim girls, including taking legal action against the perpetrators.
