An unidentified young man, suspected of being a thief, died after allegedly being beaten by Ansar members at the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) office in the capital’s Tejgaon Industrial Area on Tuesday.
The deceased, aged around 25, was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in an unconscious condition, where doctors declared him dead around 3:00pm.
The incident occurred at the BTCL office in Satrasta area under Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station.
Mohammad Saiful, an office assistant at BTCL who took the youth to the hospital, said three people entered the office in the Satrasta area in the morning allegedly with the intention of stealing.
Sensing their presence, Ansar members chased them, and two managed to escape by scaling a wall, while the third was caught, he said.
“The Ansar members caught one of them and beat him severely. He became unconscious. We later rescued him in an injured condition and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” Saiful said.
Inspector Mohammad Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, said the body was kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
