Rhea and Showik were arrested in September by India's narcotics control authority in connection with the drugs case. Both the siblings were charged under multiple sections of the anti-narcotics law. The actress was, however, released on bail in October by Mumbai High Court.
"The special court has finally given bail to Showik almost three months after his arrest as the narcotics sleuths failed to file a chargesheet in the case within the mandatory 90-day period. We are preparing the necessary documents so that he can walk out of jail latest by Thursday," a lawyer told the media.
Rhea was, in fact, arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on September 9, following days of questioning, in connection with the death of 34-year-old Sushant Singh, whose body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his Mumbai flat on June 14. She was accused of procuring cannabis for her late actor-boyfriend.
Immediately after the arrest of Rhea, the names of at least 20 top Bollywood celebrities — from actors to filmmakers to designers — surfaced in the drugs case. Several of them, including leading female Bollywood actors — Rakul Preet Singh, Deepika Padukone, Sara Ali Khan and Shraddha Kapoor — were subsequently grilled by NCB.
The grilling came in the wake of WhatsApp chats retrieved from Rhea's mobile phone indicating that they procured banned substances like cannabis, weed and hash from dealers with links to foreign countries. All the actors have, however, reportedly denied any links with such drug dealers.
