Criticising the government's unilateral decision to allow a humanitarian corridor for the displaced Rohingyas from Arakan without consulting all political parties, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir suggested that such decisions be taken collectively.
Speaking at a roadside rally in Khagrabari Sheikh Bazar under Jagannathpur union of Thakurgaon Sadar upazila on Monday evening, Fakhrul emphasised the need for an inclusive approach to humanitarian and political decisions.
Addressing the political reform, Fakhrul questioned, “What is reform? I don’t understand it. I understand democracy and people’s rights. Professor Yunus has been entrusted with the responsibility of organising elections, not political reform. He is wise, a Nobel Laureate, but not a politician.”
The BNP leader accused Awami League of turning the country into a living hell over the past 15 years, citing allegations of enforced disappearances, corruption, and repression.
“People have shed blood to overthrow Hasina,” he said, referring to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Fakhrul calls for unity to restore democracy
He also alleged that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had been tortured in custody under false charges, kept in isolated rooms like a ‘rat in a trap.’
Fakhrul reiterated Khaleda Zia’s message following what he described as a people’s uprising: “Let’s leave behind all vengeance and build a beautiful Bangladesh together.”
He addressed religious harmony, stating, “We call our Hindu brothers by that very name—brothers. Former MP Ramesh Chandra Sen tried to create a division. We want to ensure the safety of Hindu citizens. Everyone must be able to practice their religion freely.”
Fakhrul concluded with a call for unity and peaceful coexistence among all communities, saying, “We have fought for democracy. The country is free, but people still lack their rights. We must now vote to form a government truly of the people.”
Fakhrul hopes election uncertainty to be resolved through dialogue, unity
Several BNP leaders including district BNP General Secretary Mirza Faisal Amin, Joint General Secretary Paigam Ali, Sadar Upazila President Abdul Hamid, General Secretary Mahbub Hossain Tuhin, and Women’s Wing President Foratun Nahar Paris, among others were present at the rally.
