Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has resigned from the post of BNP secretary general and from the party’s National Standing Committee following his nomination as the party’s candidate for the presidential election.
Emerging from a meeting of BNP Standing Committee members and senior leaders, BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told reporters that Fakhrul has already tendered his resignations from both posts.
Earlier, BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman formally announced Fakhrul as the party’s presidential candidate.
Fakhrul, 78, has been serving as BNP secretary general since 2016.
