A medical board has decided to perform brain surgery on Prime Minister’s political adviser and BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, who is undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital.
“After reviewing all reports, the medical board decided to carry out brain surgery on Mirza Abbas. He was taken to the operation theatre a short while ago at around 3:10pm,” BNP Health Affairs Secretary Dr Rafiqul Islam told UNB on Friday.
He said a medical board formed with specialist doctors took the decision considering the critical condition of the BNP leader.
Rafiqul said Abbas underwent a CT scan in the morning and the report showed a deterioration in his condition.
“Following the report, a virtual meeting of the medical board was held and the doctors decided to perform the surgery. Consent was also taken from the family members,” he added.
Dr Rafiqul said the medical board includes country’s leading neurologists Prof Ali Uzzaman Zowarder, Prof Kazi Din Mohammad, Prof Shahabuddin Talukder, Prof Raziul Haque, Prof Syed Saeed Ahmed, Prof Kader Sheikh and Prof Shafiqul Islam, along with doctors from Evercare Hospital.
Earlier, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited Evercare Hospital after Juma prayers on Friday and was briefed by the medical board about Abbas’s condition.
Dr Rafiqul requested the people of the country to pray for the recovery of Mirza Abbas.
Mirza Abbas was admitted to Evercare Hospital in Bashundhara on Wednesday evening after he suddenly fell ill and lost consciousness during iftar.
