The Chuadanga district unit of the National Citizen Party (NCP) has suspended the newly formed 40-member committee of its Nehalpur Union unit, just two days after its formation, following controversy over the political background of a key appointee.
The suspension came after allegations surfaced that Saiful Islam, appointed as the chief coordinator of the new committee, had previously served as the organizing secretary of the local Awami League unit.
The issue sparked immediate criticism within the party and on social media, prompting a swift response from the district leadership.
The controversy erupted during the inauguration of the Nehalpur Union NCP office on Monday (October 20). The event was attended by several district and upazila-level leaders, including Sadar Upazila Chief Coordinator Mizanur Arefin, Joint Coordinator Amir Hossain, District Member Tanvir Rahman Anik, and Darshana Upazila Member Sohel Parvez.
Shortly after the committee was announced, posts began circulating online revealing Saiful Islam’s alleged affiliation with the Awami League. Once verified, the revelation caused discontent and embarrassment among NCP leaders at both the district and upazila levels.
In response, the district NCP issued a formal notice on Wednesday (October 22), signed by District Chief Coordinator Khwaja Amirul Bashar Biplob, announcing the suspension of the Nehalpur Union Committee.
“The Nehalpur Union Committee of Chuadanga Sadar Upazila has been suspended due to unavoidable reasons. All activities of the committee will remain halted until further notice,” the statement read.
Speaking to UNB, Bashar Biplob said, “Several people shared evidence, including photos, confirming that Saiful Islam was indeed the organizing secretary of the Nehalpur Union Awami League. I was not aware of this at the time of the appointment. Upon verification, I decided to suspend the committee.”
He added that a meeting will be held with district leaders on Saturday to review the situation further, after which a final decision will be made.
Tuhin, joint coordinator of the now-suspended committee, acknowledged Saiful’s past political involvement.
“It’s true that Saiful Islam used to work for the Awami League, but he now wants to work with the NCP,” he said. “We haven’t yet received any official notification about the suspension.”
