Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Friday said no individual or political party could claim exclusive credit for the Liberation War, calling for due recognition of the contributions of all those who played roles in the country's independence.
“Instead of competing over credit for the history of independence, everyone should be recognised for their respective contributions,” he said while addressing a discussion organised by Jamaat's Dhaka north unit at the Moghbazar area in the capital, marking the National Revolution and Solidarity Day.
Shafiqur said the BNP did not exist in 1971 or 1975, but that did not mean the contributions of individuals who played important roles in those periods should be overlooked.
He said the contributions of those involved in different stages of the Liberation War, including raising the flag of independence, should be remembered and given proper recognition.
The Liberation War's leadership and contributions, he said, could not be treated as the exclusive property of any individual or political party.
Referring to the political developments following independence, the Jamaat chief said historical events should be assessed objectively rather than through partisan competition over their legacy.
He also called for acknowledging the roles of different individuals in the country's struggle for independence, stressing that no one's contribution should be undermined.
Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar, Assistant Secretary General Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair and Dhaka north unit Ameer Mohammad Selim Uddin, among others, also spoke at the programme.
