Manchester City have agreed to sign England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in a club-record deal worth a reported $155 million (£116 million), making him one of the most expensive footballers in history.
The transfer will be completed in the coming weeks after Anderson finishes his FIFA World Cup campaign, the two Premier League clubs confirmed in separate statements on Thursday.
City said the 22-year-old midfielder had undergone a medical examination in Kansas City and would officially join the club after the remaining formalities are completed.
The reported $155 million (£116 million) fee surpasses the $139 million (£100 million) City paid for Jack Grealish in 2021, setting a new club transfer record. It also ranks among the biggest deals in Premier League history, alongside Liverpool's signing of Alexander Isak for $170 million (£125 million), Florian Wirtz's move for up to $156 million (£116 million), and Chelsea's acquisition of Moises Caicedo for $146 million (£115 million).
The world transfer record remains Paris Saint-Germain's signing of Brazilian forward Neymar from Barcelona for $262 million (€222 million) in 2017.
Anderson joined Nottingham Forest from Newcastle United in 2024 for a reported $47 million (£35 million) and has since developed into a regular member of England's national team.
Renowned for his work rate, pressing ability, physicality and passing range, Anderson is regarded as one of England's most promising midfielders. City are expected to view him as a long-term successor to Ballon d'Or winner Rodri, whose recent seasons have been disrupted by injuries.
The signing also comes after the departure of long-serving midfielder Bernardo Silva, who left the club at the end of his contract and recently joined Real Madrid.
The move marks the first major signing under new Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, who recently succeeded Pep Guardiola as head coach.
