Five people were reported missing after a sudden flash flood in the Budhi Gandaki River swept away 65 houses across Gorkha and Dhading districts of central Nepal on Sunday morning.
Armed Police Force spokesperson Netra Bahadur Karki told media that all five missing persons were reported from Gorkha district, adding that report collection remains ongoing. He said the flood also destroyed two motorable bridges and two suspension bridges.
The flash flood was triggered by a landslide at Chumanubri Rural Municipality in Gorkha district, which temporarily dammed the Budhi Gandaki River, Nepal Army said by a statement. The river subsequently breached the landslide blockage, sending a sudden surge of water, mud, and debris that devastated settlements along its banks.
Following the disaster, the Nepal Army airlifted 36 people to safer locations, while search and rescue operations remain underway by security forces.
