Afghan authorities destroyed around 1,000 tonnes of expired and substandard medicines and cosmetics in southern Kandahar province on Monday.
The confiscated products, valued at over 20 million US dollars, had accumulated at border crossing points across the province over the past 18 months after being illegally imported.
Mawlawi Mansoorul Haq Zakir, head of Kandahar Customs, said the goods were outdated, low-quality, and failed to meet national quality standards.
The destruction is part of intensified nationwide efforts to protect public health and enforce quality controls. Earlier in late October, authorities in northern Balkh province similarly destroyed 142 tonnes of expired and substandard medicines and food products.
