Ishraque’s supporters stage sit-in near Matsya Bhaban
Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain on Tuesday continued their protest for the seventh consecutive day at Matsya Bhaban intersection demanding his swearing in as DSCC mayor.
Vehicular movement on roads adjacent to Matsya Bhaban came to halt, forcing commuters to use alternative routes.
Leaders and activists of BNP started gathering at key points including the High Court gate, Press Club, and Shikkha Bhaban intersection before converging in front of Matsya Bhaban.
Abu Sayed Gazi, sports secretary of Ward 18 of New Market BNP, said, “We will continue our movement until the oath-taking takes place. The verdict was supposed to be announced today, but it wasn’t. It would be tomorrow. Until then, we will remain here.”
Shahin Hossain, acting secretary of Ward 15 Dhanmondi BNP, said, “We are holding our protests peacefully. It will continue until the expected judgment is delivered. However, we are trying to minimise public inconvenience as much as possible.”
Petition against gazette on Ishraque : Judgment deferred to Thursday
Ashiq, another demonstrator, said, “We are ordinary citizens and supporters of Ishraque bhai. We will remain here until the verdict is announced.”
The supporters began their protest last Wednesday demanding that Ishraque Hossain be sworn in and handed over the responsibilities of the DSCC mayor.
They also issued an ultimatum until 10 am today to fulfill their demand.

Mayor-elect Ishraque’s supporters locked all gates of Nagar Bhaban disrupting services
Slogan-chanting supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain locked all the gates of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) headquarters, Nagar Bhaban, on Saturday to demand that their leader be sworn in as the mayor as declared by the Election Commission.
All entry gates of Nagar Bhaban were put under lock and key, halting the services and activities in the office, officials said.
The supporters of Ishraque, under the banner of ‘Dhakabashi’ gathered outside the Nagar Bhaban and put gates under lock and key. They also announced to continue their demonstration for Sunday.
They blamed Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, for the delay in taking oath as DSCC mayor.
The protesters declared the adviser unwelcome at Nagar Bhaban.
Ruhul Amin, legal officer of DSCC, said, 'Supporters of Ishraque locked all gates on Saturday. Our online activities are ongoing. Since most of the City Corporation's workers are in the field, it's not a big problem even if we can't come to the office. However, some activities will definitely be affected.”
Earlier, in the day, the supporters of Ishraque brought out a procession and marched towards the Nagar Bhaban at around 9 am.
When they tried to march toward the Secretariat, police obstructed them, forcing them to return at Nagar Bhaban.

The protesters announced a long march programme from the Nagar Bhaban to the Secretariat for Saturday, demanding that the mayor's responsibilities are given to Ishraque.
As part of the progrmme, his supporters demonstrated and staged sit-in in front of the Nagar Bhaban.
The EC on April 27 last, issued the gazette notification clearing Ishraque’s election as mayor. The next day Law Adviser Asif Nazrul claimed the EC acted before receiving opinion from the Law Ministry.
On March 27 last year, Judge of the Election Tribunal in Dhaka Md Nurul Islam nullified the result that had declared Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh elected in the 2020 DSCC election and instead declared the winner.

Writ filed seeking to stop Ishraque from taking oath as mayor
A writ petition was filed with the High Court (HC) on Wednesday seeking a direction to prevent BNP leader Ishraque Hossain from taking oath as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
The writ also sought action against the Judge of Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Election Tribunal for giving a fraudulent judgement by declaring Ishraque as mayor.
Md. Mamunur Rashid, a resident of Dhaka South City Corporation, filed the writ in the relevant branch of the High Court.
The secretary of the local government division, law secretary, chief election commissioner, election commission secretary, joint district judge Md. Nurul Islam and Md. Ishraque Hossain were made defendants in the writ petition.
The writ petition will be heard by the High Court bench of Justice Md. Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury next Sunday, said the petitioner's lawyer Kazi Akbar Ali.
Zubaida Rahman granted bail in graft case
Earlier on March 27 , Judge of Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Election Tribunal Md Nurul Islam cancelled the results of the 2020 DSCC election and announced BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
Later on April 27, the EC issued a gazette notification declaring him as mayor.
On April 28, two Dhaka residents, including writ petitioner Mamunur Rashid, sent legal notices to the authorities concerned to appeal or review the verdict and decree given by the Election Tribunal declaring Ishraque as mayor.
The notice also asked to refrain from publishing gazettes in the name of Ishraque and administering oaths to him.
Meanwhile, supporters of Ishraque staged a demonstration on Wednesday, demanding that he be sworn in and handed the responsibilities of mayor of the Dhaka South City Corporation.

Earlier in the morning, at around 8:30am, thousands of people gathered in front of Nagar Bhaban under the banner of Dhakabashi (Residents of Dhaka) and formed a human chain in support of Ishraque.

Court declares BNP leader Ishraque DSCC mayor
A Dhaka court on Thursday cancelled the results to the 2020 DSCC election and announced BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
Judge of Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Election Tribunal Md Nurul Islam passed the order, said the defendant’s lawyer Taherul Islam Touhid.
The BNP leader was present at the court while the court was delivering the judgment.
Election Tribunal declares BNP leader Shahadat as CCC Mayor
Later, a celebratory procession led by Ishraque was brought on the court premises following the verdict.
Ishraque is the son of undivided Dhaka City Corporation’s former Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka.

A prominent BNP politician wanted in connection with an arson attack in 2020 has been arrested.
Enamul Haque Mithu, additional deputy commissioner (Motijheel zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said that Ishraque Hossain was nabbed from Shapla Chattar in the Motijheel area at 11.30am Wednesday.
