SC scraps bail to Laxmipur UP chairman Selim in graft case
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed a High Court order that had granted bail to controversial union parishad chairman of Chandpur Md Selim Khan in a corruption case.
The court also ordered Selim Khan to surrender before the court by September 27.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice M Enayetur Rahim passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Advocate Momtaz Uddin Fakir appeared for Salim Khan at the court while Advocate Khorshed Alam Khan stood for ACC.
On September 14, the High Court (HC) granted anticipatory bail to him for four weeks in the graft case.
The HC, however, ordered Selim Khan to surrender before the trial court concerned within four weeks in connection with the case.
On August 1, ACC’s assistant director Ataur Rahman filed the case against Selim Khan for acquiring the assets illegally.

According to the complaint, Selim Khan acquired assets worth Tk 34,53, 81,119 beyond his known source of income and he concealed information about his assets.
On August 8, the Appellate Division ruled that Md Selim Khan must pay a huge amount in royalties against sand extraction from the Meghna river banks.
It said since 2016, Selim Khan had been extracting sand from the Meghna River in Chandpur Sadar and Haimchar illegally, causing the government to incur huge losses.

HC directs Laxmipur UP Chairman Selim Khan to surrender within 3 weeks
The High Court on Sunday directed controversial Laxmipur UP Chairman Md Selim Khan to surrender to the trial court within three weeks in a case filed over acquiring Tk 34 crore illegal assets through unauthorised sand mining.
Bench of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Seim passed the order rejecting his bail plea during a hearing.
Advocate Khorshed Alam appeared for chairman Selim while advocate Fowzia Akter Popy represented Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

On August 1, ACC’s assistant director Ataur Rahman filed the case against Selim Khan for acquiring assets worth Tk 34.53 Crore illegally.
According to the complaint, Selim Khan acquired Tk 34,53, 81,119 crore worth assets which exceeds his known income and he concealed information about his Tk 66.99 lakh worth assets.
Earlier on August 8, the appellate division of the Supreme Court ruled that Md Selim Khan must pay a huge amount in royalties against sand extraction from the Meghna river bank.
It said since 2016, writ petitioner Selim Khan had been extracting sand from the Meghna river in a part of Chandpur Sadar and Haimchar indiscriminately, without paying any royalties, causing the government to incur a huge loss.

Appellate Division asked to collect the royalties from Selim Khan for the time period starting from April 5, 2018, the date of an earlier High Court order, to April 4, 2022 -when the order was suspended by the Supreme Court.

AL expels UP chairman Selim Khan
Widely discussed Awami League leader and Laxmipur union chairman Selim Khan has been expelled from the party.
Chandpur district Awami League at an extended meeting removed the criticized chairman, who excavated sands illegally from the Meghna River, from his post on Saturday.
Nasir Uddin Ahmad, president of Laxmipur union Awami League confirmed the matter to UNB.

Party sources said Selim Khan has been expelled from the party permanently for tarnishing the image of the party.
Earlier on May 29, the Appellate Division canceled the High Court judgement allowing Selim Khan to extract sand from the Meghna River in Chandpur.
