Nafiz Alam, who appeared in DW documentary, arrested from Dhaka’s Bashundhara
Police on Sunday (April 09, 2023) night arrested Nafiz Mohammad Alam, who was interviewed in a recent Deutsche Welle (DW) documentary on RAB, from his home in Bashundhara residential area of Dhaka.
Officer-in-charge of Bhatara Police Station Asaduzzaman told UNB that police arrested Nafiz in a case filed under the pornography act.
Tipped off, a team of Bhatara police carried out a raid at Nafiz's residence in G block of Bashundhara Housing on Sunday evening.

Foreign alcohol, one laptop, one motorcycle and a mobile phone were seized during the raid.
Sub-inspector Riyad Ahmed of Bhatara Police Station filed a case against Nafiz with the police station under the Narcotics Control Act, said the OC.
He also said Nafiz was accused in three cases and there was an arrest warrant against him filed with the police station under the pornography act.

Replying to a question, the OC said that Nafiz has been produced before a Dhaka court.

Peruvian national gets life term in narcotics case
A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced a Peruvian national to life term imprisonment in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
The convict is Jaime Burgle Gomez.
Judge Fatema Ferdous of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-5 handed down the judgment.
The court also acquitted two other accused - Md Abdus Salam and Salah Uddin- as the charges brought against them were not proved, said state counsel Lawyer Rezaur Rahman.
According to the case statement, Jaime was scheduled to fly to India on a flight of Emirates Airlines from Sao Paulo, Brazil. But the flight changed its route and landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on September 1 in 2015.

Airport customs officers searched Jaime on aninformation and found two kg of cocaine worth Tk 52 crore.
A case was filed at Airport Police Station.
Investigating the case, Inspector Mofazzal Hossain of the Directorate of Investigation submitted a chargesheet against three people on December 2 of the same year.
On April 7, 2016, the court started the trial by framing charges against the accused.

Samrat gets bail in drugs case, but cannot walk out of jail
A Dhaka court on Monday granted bail to expelled Jubo League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
Dhaka 7th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Tehsin Iftekhar passed the order after Samrat’s counsel Ehsanul Haque Shomaji appealed for his bail.

On Sunday, Samrat secured bail in an arms case and a money laundering case filed against him.
However, Samrat will not be able to walk out of jail as he is yet to get bail in a graft case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), said Samrat’s counsel.
Samrat has been undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital since November 24 last year.
On October 6 in 2019, Rab arrested Samrat and his associate Enamul Haque Arman from Chauddagram in Cumilla.
Rab later raided his Kakrail office on that day. Huge quantities of foreign liquor, pistols, and two hides of kangaroo were seized from his office.
He was later sentenced by a mobile court to six months in prison under the Wildlife Conservation Act and was sent to jail the same day.
On October 7, Abdul Khaleque, Deputy Assistant Director of Rab-1 filed two cases against Samrat at Ramna police station under the Arms and the Narcotics Act. Arman was also made accused in the narcotic case.
On November 4, Shekhar Chandra Mallik, Sub Inspector of Rab-1 submitted a charge sheet against Samrat in the arms case.

On November 12, ACC filed a case against him for acquiring assets worth Tk 2.94 crore beyond his known sources of income.
On September 12, 2020, Rashedur Rahman, Sub-Inspector of CID filed a case against him at Ramna police station for laundering Tk 195 crore to Malaysia and Singapore.
Lastly, on November 26 last year, the investigation officer of the case, Jahangir Alam, submitted a charge sheet before the court.

Pori Moni case: Charge-framing hearing deferred until Jan 5
A Dhaka court on Sunday set a new date, January 5, for hearing arguments on whether to press charges against actress Pori Moni and two others in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
The hearing was scheduled for today.
But Dhaka Special Judge of Court-10, Md Nazrul Islam deferred it as the court was adjourned due to the death of former general secretary of Dhaka Bar Association Ayubur Rahman.

The January 2 hearing date was set on December 14 following request of the actress’s lawyer Lawyer Nilanjana Rifat Surovi as Pori Moni fell sick on her way to the court that day.
Pori Moni and two others are currently out on bail in the case.
On November 15, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Emrul Kayesh took into cognizance the charges framed by police against the accused and fixed December 14 as the date for the framing of charges.
Earlier, on October 4, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submitted a charge sheet against Pori Moni and the two others in the case.
CID inspector and also the investigation officer in the case, Kazi Mostafa Kamal submitted the charge sheet to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court.

Pori Moni was arrested on August 4, following a raid by RAB on her Banani residence. A case was filed against her under the Narcotics Control Act the following day.
On August 22, she was remanded in judicial custody again after inspector Kazi produced her in a court on the completion of a day's police remand, her third.
On August 31, a Dhaka court granted bail to Pori Moni in the narcotics case until the submission of the charge sheet. She walked out of jail the following day.

Why putting alcohol under drug category should not be declared illegal: HC
The High Court on Monday asked the government to explain as to why alcohol, categorised as drug under the 2018 Narcotics Control Act and subsequent schedule, should not be declared illegal and unconstitutional. The An HC bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman issued the rule after hearing a petition. Secretaries to the ministries of law, home, finance and the Director of Department of Narcotics Control have been made respondents to the rule which is returnable in four weeks. Advocate Ahsanul Karim stood for the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Amit Das Gupta represented the state. Earlier, Mohammad Faruk, a Managing Director of RJ Tower Hotel and Resort Limited in Ashuganj of Brahmanbaria, filed a petition with the High Court seeking directives to exclude alcohol from the drug category under Narcotics Control Act, said Ahsanul Karim. The petitioner pointed out that importers of alcohol, which is allowed as an import item, face problem since it has been categorised as drugs like yaba and crystal meth, which are banned from import or export.

Court fixes Nov 15 for hearing on chargesheet against Pori Moni
A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted bail to actress Pori Moni and her two associates in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act, and fixed
November 15 for the hearing on the acceptance of the chargesheet against them.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court's acting judge Rabiul Alam passed the order after the three surrendered before the court and sought bail. The other two are Ashraful Islam Dipu and Kabir Hossain.

Earlier, on October 10, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sattabrata Shikder granted bail to Pori Moni and Ashraful in this case.

CID inspector and also the investigating officer in the case, Kazi Mostafa Kamal submitted the chargesheet to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court.

Pori Moni appears in court
Film actress Pori Moni on Wednesday appeared before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in a drugs case filed against her at the Banani police station.
Court sources told UNB that the case is slated to come up for hearing later in the day.

Pori Moni’s lawyer Nilanjana Rifat said the investigation report in the case will also be submitted to the court on Wednesday.

Pori Moni gets bail after a long wait
A Dhaka court on Tuesday finally granted bail to film actress Pori Moni in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act, 26 days after her arrest.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Emrul Kayesh passed the bail order.
“Now there's no bar to release her from jail,” said her lawyer Mujibur Rahman.

Pori Moni was granted bail on a bond of Tk 20,000 until police submit the chargesheet in the drug case.
On August 22, Pori Moni was sent to jail after inspector of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Kazi Golam Mostafa produced her in the court on completion of a one-day remand. No bail petition was submitted on her behalf on this day.
On August 22, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Emrul Kayesh set September 13 for hearing the bail petition of Pori Moni in the case.
Later, she appealed to the High Court challenging its validity. The interim bail of the actress was also sought in the petition.
The High Court on August 26 issued a rule seeking explanation as to why a lower court order fixing September 13 for hearing the bail petition of Pori Moni in a case under the Narcotics Control Act should not be cancelled.
The court also asked why the bail application would not be heard within two days.

Pori Moni had been remanded thrice for interrogation by police since Rab arrested her on August 4 from her Banani residence.
Later, a case was filed against the popular Dhallywood actress for illegal possession of alcohol and drugs in her house.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was tasked with investigating the charges brought against her.
They took over the case from the Detective Branch (DB) of police and were carrying out the investigation.
Film actress Pori Moni and her associate Nazrul Islam Raj were ringleaders of an organised gang , said Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of Legal and Media Wing of Rab, in a media briefing on August 6.
Bangladesh Film Actors’ Association (Bangladesh Cholochitro Shilpi Samity) suspended the membership of Pori Moni two days after her arrest at a press briefing held at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC).

Expressing his frustration over the decision, Shakib Khan wrote from his official Facebook page: “I have noticed that after the arrest of Pori Moni only on the basis of allegations, the Film Actors' Association has hastily held a press conference and suspended her membership, without extending any hand of cooperation to her at this crucial moment.”
“This behaviour of the association is really very mysterious. Many conscientious senior-junior artistes and cultural activists have regrets about the issue. This is an inhumane treatment of the organization against her. The question remains, in whose interest is the current Film Artists Association?” Shakib Khan wrote on the post.

Pori Moni placed on CID remand again
A Dhaka court on Thursday placed actress Pori Moni on a one-day fresh police remand in connection with a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Atikul Islam passed the order, rejecting the actor's bail plea after Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inspector Kazi Golam Mostafa produced her in the court this morning.

Earlier on Tuesday, inspector Kazi, also the investigating officer in the case, sought Pori Moni's remand for five days for the third phase of investigation in the case.
On the other hand, Pori Moni’s counsel Majibur Rahman filed a petition seeking bail for his client in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury on Monday.
On Friday, a Dhaka court sent actress Pori Moni and her associate Ashraful Islam Dipu to jail, turning down their bail pleas. A Dhaka court on August 10 placed actress Pori Moni on a two-day fresh remand in the case.

Pori Moni, whose allegation of rape attempt on her by businessman Nasir U Mahmood and others prompted firestorm in social media barely two months back, was detained from her home on August 4.
A case was filed against the actress under the Narcotics Control Act the following day.
On August 5, a Dhaka Court placed her on a four-day remand in the case.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been tasked with investigating the charges brought against her. The department took over the case from the Detective Branch (DB).

Helena gives confessional statement in narcotics case
Helena Jahangir, expelled ruling party activist and businessperson, on Wednesday gave confessional statement under section 164 in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dhiman Chandra Mandal recorded her statement when CID Inspector Sajeda, the investigation officer in the case, produced her before the court, said court sources.
When she was giving confessional statement, lawyer Shafiqul Islam submitted a petition for her bail in a separate court.
However, the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan fixed Thursday for the bail hearing.

Earlier in the day, another Dhaka court rejected a bail petition of Helana Jahangir in a fraud case filed with Dhaka's Pallabi Police Station.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim passed the order after her lawyer moved a petition seeking bail in the case.
The same court on Tuesday granted her bail in another case filed with the same police station under the Telecommunications Control Act.
On the night of July 29, members of Rapid Action Battalion-1 (Rab) arresed Helena Jahangir from her Gulshan residence, four days after she was removed from her post of a ruling party sub-committee.
The elite force members "seized foreign liquor, illegal walkie-talkie sets, casino equipment and deer skins" during a four-hour raid on her home.

Later another raid was conducted at Joyjatra IPTV station in Mirpur and it was sealed after recovering illegal equipement.
Later the court placed Helena on a 17-day remand in four cases
