No crossing point for 2 months; man lends ladder to passengers for Tk 5, gets arrested
A youth was arrested on Sunday (March 17, 2024) after a video of him went viral on social media where he could be seen lending ladders to bus passengers in exchange of Tk5 on a highway in Narayanganj .
AKM Sharifuddin, In charge of Kanchpur Highway Shimla Police Camp, said they arrested him after watching the viral video.
Risky road crossing had become a common scene in the 3.3 km area for the past two months as there were no crossing points from the long distance route's road to the regional road which is at least 24 minutes walking distance.

For the past two months, the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) authority has kept the crossing point at Dhaka-bound road from Kanchpur Bridge in Siddhirganj to Kuwait Plaza area closed. As a result, passengers have been crossing roads by jumping the lane's divider.
According to the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), the four-lane Dhaka-bound road from Kanchpur Bridge in Siddhirganj to Kuwait Plaza area was divided into two lanes with high dividers to stop risky road crossing and to ensure long-distance vehicles' direct route to Dhaka.
A gate was kept open in front of the RHD office for the movement of passengers from long-distance lanes to regional lanes, but the RHD authorities closed it two months ago.

Several microbuses seized in Cumilla over lockdown violations
Highway Police in Cumilla Tuesday claimed to have seized a number of microbuses and pick-up vehicles for violating lockdown norms.
According to Additional Superintendent of Cumilla Police Molla Mohammad Shahin, cops are keeping a strict vigil on all roads, particularly the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, to prevent the entry of public transport vehicles carrying home-bound passengers from other districts ahead of the Eid holidays.
"This is to ensure strict compliance with all lockdown norms. Though bus services have resumed in cities, inter-district public transport services still remain suspended," the police officer said.
These public transport vehicles were seized on Monday night for carrying home-bound passengers from Dhaka ahead of the Eid holidays, police said, adding a number of passengers were also found without masks and flouting social distancing norms.
As per the directives of the government, police have set up several check posts on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway for curbing the mad rush of home-bound people.

The drive to seize vehicles flouting lockdown norms will continue till the restrictions are lifted by the government, said ASP Shahin.
At least 100 buses have been seized for flouting government directives in Cumilla district in the last two days.
Public transport services were suspended in Bangladesh on April 5, with the government announcing a countrywide lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus. However, the government subsequently allowed the resumption of intra-city bus services.

The transport owners' associations have already urged the government to resume bus services across the country and demanded food assistance for all unemployed transport workers in Bangladesh.

100 buses seized in Cumilla for violating govt rules
At least 100 buses have been seized for operating services flouting the government’s directives in Cumilla district in the last two days till Sunday night.
Additional superintendent of Cumilla Highway Police Mollah Mohammad Shahin, said as per the government directives they have set up a number of check-posts on Dhaka-Chattogram highway’s Alekharchar, Miarbazar and others important points to prevent movement of inter-district buses.

During the regular check, the highway police found at least one hundred buses are carrying passengers from one district to another district ignoring the government’s directives to prevent transmission of coronavirus.
All the buses have been kept at the respective police stations and police camp and cases have been filed in this connection.
