Human chain demands capital punishment for teacher Utpal’s killer
Hundreds of students and teachers from different educational institutions in Savar formed a human chain at Savar Bus Stand area demanding capital punishment of the killer of college teacher Utpal on Thursday.
Later, a delegation of teachers submitted a memorandum to Savar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mazharul Islam with several demands including capital punishment of suspected killer Jitu.
Mazharul said that security has been beefed up at schools and colleges in Savar after the incident.

Jitu beat up Utpal indiscriminately with a cricket stump on Saturday, leaving the latter critically injured. Utpal died at Savar Enam Medical College Hospital the next day while undergoing treatment.
The deceased’s family logged a complaint with Ashulia police station against Jitu. Jitu’s family fled the area after filing of the case.
A team of Rab-1 arrested Jitu from Gazipur’s Sreepur and his father was arrested from Kushtia’s Kumarkhali on Wednesday.

Six to die for killing minor in Cox’s Bazar
A court in Cox’s Bazar has sentenced six people to death for abducting and killing a seven-year-old boy in 2011.
Cox’s Bazar district and sessions judge Md Ismail handed down the punishment on Wednesday after holding the six guilty of the crime. However, two other accused in the case have been acquitted "for lack of evidence".

The convicts are Sumon Ali, 26, son of Aftab Ali, Yeasin alias Raihan, 29, son of Shamsul Haque, Yeakub, 34, son of Aslam Mia, Ishak alias Kalu, 31, son of Atlongi Hossain, Saidul Hossain, 47, son of Abdur Rahim, and Nazrul Islam, 28, son of Nabi Hossain. Of them Saidul, Ishak and Nazrul were tried in absentia.
Those acquitted are Mohibulla, 45, son of Abdul Jalil, and Didar Mia, son of Zafar Ahmed.
According to the prosecution, Sumon, who worked for the boy's father -- Md Abdullah of Teknaf upazila -- had hatched the plot to abduct the child for ransom.
On September 6, 2011, the convicts picked up the boy -- Waliullah -- from near his house. But when the boy raised an alarm, the convicts slit his throat and dumped the body near his house.
On September 9, 2011, Waliullah’s father lodged a complaint against 4-5 people with Teknaf Police. The cops later registered a murder case.
On December 30, 2012, the investigating officer in the case submitted a chargesheet against five people. The case was later handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
On August 25, 2017, CID officers submitted a supplementary chargesheet against eight people.

Man sentenced to death for killing college student in Khulna
A Khulna court sentenced a man to death on Monday for killing a college student in 2012.
The convict is Mohammad Bachhu Sheikh. The court also jailed him for 10 years under two different sections and fined him Tk 20,000 and Tk 10,000.
Meanwhile, Mozammel Hossain Milon and Abul Kalam Azad were jailed for seven and two years respectively in the case. They were fined Tk 10,000 and Tk 5,000 by the court.
According to the prosecution, Obaidur Rahman Rubel, a college student of Dumuria upazila was abducted by the convicts on October 23, 2012.
Rubel’s body was found the following day with his throat slit.
Sheikh Lutfur Rahman, the victim’s father, filed a case at Dumuria Police Station.
Taijul Islam, inspector of Dumuria Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted chargesheet against three people on November 17, 2013.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Yearab Hossain delivered the verdict.
All the convicts were tried in absentia.
