Lifer gets 7-yr jail for threatening to kill imam
The life term convict Shafiur Rahman Farabi in blogger Avijit Roy murder case was on Monday sentenced a seven year imprisonment in another case over the threats to kill the Imam who conducted namaz-e-Janaza of blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider around nine years back.
The court of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge AM Julfiqar Hyat also fined him Tk 20,000, in default of which he will have to suffer six more months’ jail, lawyer Nazrul Islam Shamim, public prosecutor of the court, said.
According to the case statement, Physics department student Farabi of Chittagong University uploaded a Facebook post threatening to kill the Imam who conducted the Janaza of the blogger Rajib, also an activist of Shahbagh movement staged demanding justice of war criminals, in 2013.
Farabi, who joined the banned Hizbut Tahrir in 2010 when he was a varsity student, was accused in a case filed for his post on July 23 in 2014, at Sher-E-Bangla Nagar police station in the capital.
Law enforcers pressed chargesheet accusing him on August 20, 2015.

Later on February 18 2016, a court framed charges against Farabi, who was arrested as suspect from the capital’s Jatrabari area on March 2 in 2015 in blogger Avijit murder case and later convicted.
After completing all legal procedures in the case, the court handed down the judgment in presence of Farabi on Monday.

6 get life term for murder during robbery in Kushtia
A Kushtia court on Wednesday sentenced six people to life term imprisonment for killing a man during a robbery in Daulatdia upazila of the district over 20 years back.
Kushtia Additional District and Sessions Judge Court Md Tajul Islam also fined the convicts Tk 25,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more imprisonment, said Anup Kumar Nandy, public prosecutor of the court.

The convicts are Swapon, Naharul, Mokbul, Shafi, Shahjahan, and Ajmal, all are residents of the upazila.
The court also acquitted eight other people as the allegations brought against them could not be proved, the lawyer said.
Of them, Swapon, Mokbul and Naharul were tried in absentia.
According to the case statement, a group of robbers equipped with lethal weapons committed robbery at the house of one Shahjahan Ali in Philipnagar village under the upazila on April 27, 2002.
The robbers killed Shahjahan Ali when he tried to resist the robbers while they were fleeing with valuables.

On the following day, victim’s son Borhan Uddin Bappi filed a murder case at the local police station.

5 get life term for murder in Faridpur
A court in Faridpur on Monday sentenced five people to life imprisonment for killing a man in Alfadanga upazila in 2012.
The lifers are Nur Islam, Md Monir Sheikh, Iktar Molla, Enayet Amin of Faridpur, and Miraj Hossain, of Gopalganj district. All of them except Nur Islam were tried in absentia.
Faridpur additional district and sessions judge-1 (Special Tribunal) Ashok Kumar Dutta delivered the judgment.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 20,000 each.
According to the case, Shahidul Islam, who used to drive motorcycle on rent, was found dead in Konagram in the upazila on July 28 in 2012.
Later, a murder case was filed at Alfadanga police station.

UP chairman, 5 others get life term for murder in Kushtia
A Kushtia court on Thursday sentenced six people including a Union Parishad (UP) chairman and his son to life term imprisonment for killing a man around seven years back.
Kusthia Additional District and Sessions Judge-1 Md Tajul Islam also fined the convicts Tk 20,000 each, in default of which they will have to serve one more in jail, said Anup Kumar Nandy, public prosecutor of the court.
Besides, the court also acquitted 15 people as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.

The convicts are Sadar upazila’s Alampur UP chairman and former general secretary of the Sadar upazila unit Awami League Akharuzzaman Biswas, 52, his son Mahmudul Hasan, 30, his brothers Habil Uddin Biswas, 49 and Babul Biswas, 46, Rashedul Islam Biddyut, 34 and Masud Gayen, 38.
Of them, Rashedul and Masud were tried in absentia.
According to the case statement, the convicts stabbed rival group activist Molla Masud Karim to death centering the UP polls in Dahkula village under the Sadar upazila on April 28, 2016.
On the following day, victim’s brother Mahbubul Karim Molla filed a murder case.
Police pressed chargesheet against the accused on January 4, 2017.

The court handed down the judgment after completing all procedures in the case, the PP added.

Sunamganj: 5 get life in prison in attempted rape, rape cases
A Sunamganj court on Thursday sentenced five people to life imprisonment in rape and attempted rape cases.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Zakir Hossain gave the order during a hearing in the presence of the accused.
The lifers are Anwar Hossain Khokon from Biswambharpur upazila; Shafi Ulla, Saidur Rahman, and Shafiul from Tahirpur upazila and Iqbal Hossain from Chatak upazila.
According to the case complaint, in 2012, Anwar abducted a college student and raped her in the Laurergar area in Tahirpur.
Later Shafi Ullah, Saidur, and Shafiul tied Anwar's hands and legs. They took turns raping the student and filmed it, and posted a video online.

The girl later filed a case against 11 people at Tahirpur Police Station. Of them, four were sentenced to life imprisonment Thursday and four others were cleared of charges. The names of the remaining three accused were dropped from the charge sheet as they were not proven guilty in the investigation.
Also, on March 17, 2012, a 13-year-old girl was abducted by Iqbal and Jaynal Abedin from Chatak upazila. The accused raped the girl after taking her to Sylhet, according to the case complaint.The court on Thursday sentenced Jaynal to life term and Iqbal to 14 years in jail.

Man gets life term for killing brother in Laxmipur
A Laxmipur court on Tuesday convicted a man and sentenced him to life term imprisonment for killing his elder brother in 2019.
The lifer is Abdul Mannan, son of Abul Kalam of Charparvatinagar village of Parvatinagar union of Sadar upazila. The convicted defendant was present in the court during the judgment.
The court also fined him Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer one year more rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, Hannan, the elder brother of the convict, had an altercation over a family feud on February 19, 2019.

At one stage, Mannan hit Hannan with a sharp weapon, leaving him dead on the spot.
Later, a case was filed following a complaint lodged by their father the next day.
Police submitted a charge sheet on March 15, 2019, against the accused Mannan.
After examining the records and witnesses, Laxmipur District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Rahibul Islam handed down the judgment.

9 get life term in Jhenaidah for killing woman after rape
A Jhenaidah court on Tuesday sentenced nine people to life term imprisonment for killing a woman after rape in 2011.
The lifers are- Rosul, Shariful Islam, Amirul Islam, Golam Rosul, Abdul Aziz, Azizur Rahman, Zahidul Islam, Badshah Mia and Abdul Baten. Among them, Shariful and Amirul were tried in absentia.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Mizanur Rahman delivered the judgment.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 1 lakh each, in default, to suffer four months more in jail.
According to the case statement, Renu Begum, wife of Arab Ali of Bishaykhali village of Jhenaidah sadar upazila, was raped and killed by the convicts in a bamboo forest on March 12 in 2011.
On the following day, police recovered the body from the spot.
A case was filed against 16 people at Jhenaidah Sadar police station in this regard.
Advocate Bazlur Rahman, Public Prosecutor (PP) of the tribunal, said 10 accused were sentenced to life imprisonment but one of them died earlier.

2 to die, 2 get life term jail for killing businessperson in Ctg
A Chattogram court on Sunday sentenced two people to death and two others to life term imprisonment for killing a businessperson in 2016.
Chattogram Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court-4 Judge Shariful Bhuiya handed down the punishment.
The condemned convicts are Kamal Hossain and Russel while the lifers are Surma Akter and Lilu Akter Ria. Of them, Lilu was tried in absentia.

According to the prosecution, Jalal Uddin Sagar, of Double Mooring area, was found dead, with his hands and legs tied up, from the north gate of CDA Residential area on October 20, 2016.
Imaz Uddin lodged a complaint with Double Mooring Police. Police registered an FIR after getting the complaint.
On May 28, 2017, police submitted chargesheet against four people.

4 get life term for 2008 deaths of two brothers in Sitakunda
A court has sentenced four people to life in prison in a case of beating to death of two brothers in Chattogram's Sitakunda.
At the same time, they have been fined Tk 20,000 each and additional 4 months non-payment imprisonment.
Chattogram Fifth Additional District and Sessions Judge Ashok Kumar Dutta passed the order on Tuesday
Confirming the order, Public Prosecutor (PP) Lokman Hossain Chowdhury said that the accused were Abul Kalam Azad, Badsha Alam, Faruk Mia and Md. Sekander of Baro Aulia area of Sitakunda upazila.

According to court sources, on April 20, 2008, Harun and his cousin Zahidul were beaten to death inside a factory in Baro Aulia area of Sitakunda over establishing dominance and enmity.
Harun's father Mohammad Ali filed a case over the murder at Sitakunda police station.
On September 18 of that year, the police submitted a chargesheet against the four, to the speedy trial tribunal.
The four accused were present at the court when the verdict was announced, said PP Lokman.

Youth gets life term for raping Thakurgaon woman
A Thakurgaon court on Tuesday sentenced a youth to life term imprisonment for raping a woman in 2010.
The lifer is Asaduzzaman alias Rizvi, of Ranisankail upazila.
Thakurgaon Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Golam Faruk delivered the judgment.
The court also fined the convict Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer six more months behind the bars.
According to the case, the victim was a student of Thakurgaon Polytechnic Institute and used to live in a female mess at Gavindanagar in Thakurgaon.

On May 27 in 2010, the convict Rizvi called the victim and raped her at a residential hotel at Ranisankail.
On May 29, the victim's father lodged a complaint with Ranisankail Police Station.
