Sajeda Chowdhury’s son wins by-election prompted by her passing
Awami League nominated candidate Shahadab Akbar Labu Chowdhury, son of the late AL leader Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, has won the Faridpur-2 by-election, according to the returning officer.
Faridpur-2 constituency fell vacant following the death of the senior Awami League leader Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury.
A primary result issued by Md Humayun Kabir, Khulna regional election officer and Faridpur-2 returning officer, said Akbar won the election securing 68,721 votes.

Meanwhile his closest contending candidate, Bangladesh Khilafat Andolan-backed Joynal Abedin Bakul Mia secured 14,889.
A total of 83,610 votes were cast in 123 polling centers through Electronic Voting Machines (EVM ) though the number of voters were 3,18,585 – a turnout of just 26 percent.
The voting for Faridpur-2 by-polls began at 8am on Saturday and continued till 4pm without any untoward incident reported.
The UNB correspondent found poor turnout of voters and agents of opposition candidates visiting at least 10 centers of Saltha and Nagarkanda upazilas.

Advocate Jaynul Abedin Mia said his polling agents were appointed at almost all centers except a few.
He claimed his polling agents were ousted from the centers but the presiding officers of different centers said they have no idea about such incidents.

Awami League picks Labu Chowdhury for Faridpur-2 by-polls
The Awami League has picked Shahdab Akbar Labu Chowdhury, younger son of late Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, as its candidates for the by election to the Faridpur-2 constituency, that fell empty following the death of the former deputy leader of the house.
The decision was taken in a meeting of the parliamentary nomination board and local government representatives’ nomination board of the Awami League at Ganobhaban on Tuesday.
The Faridpur-2 constituency (Nagarkanda-Saltha-Krishnapur) fell vacant with the death of Sajeda Chowdhury, who breathed her last at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka on September 11 at the age of 87.
The deputy leader of the House had been admitted to hospital with post-Covid-19 complications two weeks earlier.
The by-election to Faridpur-2 constituency is scheduled to be held on November 5.
The Election Commission announced the schedule of the by-election on September 26.
As per the schedule, the last date for nomination submission is October 10, while the date for ending scrutiny of nomination papers is October 12, and the last date for withdrawal of candidacy is October 19.

First namaz-e-janaza of Sajeda Chowdhury held
The first namaz-e-janaza of Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, presidium member of the Awami League and deputy leader of the House, was held in Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur.
The namaz-e-janaza was held around 11 am at MN Academy school premises.
Thousands of people from all walks of life took part in the janaza braving rains.
She was given a guard of honour before the janaza.

After the janaza and tributes, the leaders and family members of Sajeda Chowdhury left for Dhaka with her mortal remains around 12 pm.
Her body will be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar at 3 pm so that people from all walks of life can pay homage, said Prime Minister's special assistant and Awami League Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua.
