Apple iPhone 14 vs iPhone 13: Which is the Better Deal?
Apple launched its latest innovation, the iPhone 14 series lineup on September 07, 2022. Like every year, there are buzzes and excitements centering the latest iPhone series. However, there are some mixed reactions about the iPhone 14 model, as it comes with the same chipset found in its ancestor 13 version. Now, is the new iPhone 14 worth buying? Or should you just pick up an iPhone 13 taking advantage of its slashed price? Let’s find out the best deal between iPhone 14 and iPhone 13.
iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14: Similarities and Differences
As Apple has made very minor tweaks in most departments, the exterior design might give an impression that there is almost no difference between the iPhone 14 and its ancestor 13 version. These changes are so small that they can hardly make any difference to the average user. Not to mention, these changes have improved the overall construction of the iPhone 14. Now this device can be considered refined according to the latest standards. Let’s look at the changes from the previous model.
Design and Build
From a glance, the iPhone 14 appears to be the exact carbon copy of the iPhone 13. The front dimensions of both the models are the same but if you try to put an iPhone 13 case on the 14, you will notice the difference.
Read Apple’s iPhone 14 now being assembled in India
That is because with a larger camera module the iPhone 14 is slightly thicker (7.8mm) that iPhone 13 (7.7mm). Other than that, everything else seems to be right where it was on the 13.
But perhaps the most striking change is the seamless sides on the iPhone 14. For the first time, Apple has removed the physical sim slot from the iPhone 14 series in the US market.
The move is made to facilitate e-sim adoption as it allows for dual sim connectivity with options to register up to 8 sims on a single device.
However, other region specific iPhone 14s will still come with a physical sim slot as e-sim adoption hasn’t kicked off yet globally.

The Camera
Speaking of the bump on the back, Apple has upgraded the camera module on both the back and the front.
The camera on the back is still a 12 MP one but with a much larger lens featuring 26mm wide focal length, 1/1.7" and f/1.5 aperture. This specific lens setup has been replaced by the 13 Pro series to make for noticeably better camera performance.
The same difference is seen on the front camera as well. The iPhone 14’s 12 MP front sensor now has a larger aperture of f/1.9 aperture which has been upgraded from iPhone 13’s f/2.2 aperture.
Apple iPhone 14’s camera section’s best feature has to be the autofocus which significantly increases the selfie quality.

What’s more? Apple has also included its proprietary Photonic Engine in the latest iPhone. It’s a fancy name for a new image processing module that can increase the low light image quality by up to 50%.
Processor, Performance, and Connectivity
Perhaps the greatest negative press that Apple got in the last few years is the inclusion of the same A15 Bionic chip from the iPhone 13 series to the iPhone 14. The iPhone 14 Pro models got the new and improved A16 Bionic chips. It makes a clear distinction in processing power in the same lineup for the first time.
However, it’s not the exact same chip. The A15 Bionic has been tweaked to improve the GPU from four cores to 5 cores. This increased the graphics rendering capability of the iPhone 14 by almost 18% from the previous generation.
There has been an improvement in the memory department as well. Apple has finally upgraded from 4 GB RAM on their base model to 6 GB RAM. The RAM increment is easily noticeable as apps don’t have to refresh as regularly as they used to.
Read iPhone 14 launch: What are the new features?
The combined result is improved performance on paper. We say on paper because the performance differences aren’t all that noticeable. High-intensity games still run the same as they did on the iPhone 13 before without any visible performance improvement.
However, that’s not necessarily a drawback as iPhones have long before reached a performance saturation point. The performance was already above and beyond on the iPhone 13 so it's no surprise that the improvements are only minor.
On the connectivity end, there is the new X65 5G modem on the iPhone 14. While using both 5G and LTE, there has been a 38% increase in upload and download speed. This will definitely help to enhance the 5G experience more where it is fully available.
The Display and the Speakers
There has been a little buzz regarding the display and the speaker on the iPhone 14. Some say that there is a noticeable difference from the last generation. But unfortunately, the display and the speaker are both carried over from the last generation.

Meaning the display is still the same Super Retina XDR one as Apple loves to call it. The speaker performance is also the same on both video playbacks as well as calls.
Battery and Charge Time
iPhone 14’s battery has been bumped to 3279 mAh from iPhone 13’s 3227 mAh battery. This allows for a slightly improved battery performance over the previous model. In testing, the iPhone 14 was able to clock an extra hour in video playback which seems like a pretty great deal.
The charging speed is the same 20W with the wired one and 15W with the Magsafe charger.
What’s New on the iPhone 14?
Now it's easy to get lost in the myriad of minor tweaks here and there. But did Apple actually include anything new with their new iPhone 14?
Yes, they did. But how much will it impact day-to-day use remains a question. The two additional features this year include the Emergency SOS signal via satellite and crash detection technology.

Apple has brought a premium service of connecting directly to a satellite for extreme emergencies where there are no signals or connectivity. Apple said that the feature will be free for the first two years with premium plans afterward.
On the other hand, Apple improved their gyro sensors to develop a crash detection technology that will automatically notify authorities if you find yourself in an accident.
As a user, these are just extreme cases and something that anyone would wish never to try.
Final Verdict: Which one Should you Buy?
The release of the new iPhone 14 means Apple would slash the price of their previous models by 100 dollars. And that price cut makes the choice a lot more interesting.
With an equal price, it makes sense to go for the iPhone 14 over the 13. But now you will have to pay 100 dollars more for slightly better camera performance and two new features which you’ll probably never use.

From a complete value perspective, the iPhone 13 is the better choice. It brings almost all the bells and whistles at a much cheaper price.
But if you need the latest and greatest Apple tech, the 14 can be a minimal yet understandable choice.

Apple's iPhone 14 Review: A revamped iPhone 13?
There aren’t many phones that command the same level of global attention as the iPhone does. The iPhone 14 series was launched on September 7th, 2022. Does the Apple iPhone 14 go for a big leap forward? Or is it just another incremental update? Let’s find out.
Key Specifications of Apple iPhone 14
Design and Build Quality
This year, the iPhone has scrapped its mini lineup as leaks and rumors suggested. Instead, users got a Plus variant of the device which has a similar dimension to the Pro Max with the internals of the 14.
Coming back to the iPhone 14, the design and build quality remains exactly the same here. Dimension-wise, the device is about 0.1 mm thicker than the iPhone 13 at 7.8 mm thickness. The change is almost impossible to notice in day-to-day use. And while this might feel like a design stagnation, there is more to it than the obvious.
Read iPhone 14 launch: What are the new features?
We spoke about how high-end ultra tech is coming at a saturation point and how it’s impossible to introduce breakthrough features in every generation.
The iPhone 13 series was the pinnacle of technology last year. And even though we have moved a year forward, the design and the internals are still relevant by 2022 standards.
Users will be getting the exact same external ports and button selection on the iPhone 14. However, the USA variant of the device has introduced a dual e-sim option. Meaning there won’t be any physical sim slot on the USA variant of the device.

Other region-specific models will feature physical sim slots with the Chinese variant featuring a dual nano sim option instead of the e-sim.
Overall, the iPhone 14 brings nothing new on the hardware end of things. And while it might sound boring, it is not necessarily a bad thing. Why fix something that isn’t broken?
Display
The replicative nature from last year has trickled into the display of the iPhone 14 as well. As expected from the hardware dimensions, the display of the iPhone 14 is the exact same 6.1-inch panel found on the iPhone 13.

The display itself is a Super Retina XDR OLED panel from Apple. If the name wasn’t mouthful enough, the panel itself has been absolutely stacked with features. It supports HDR 10 content along with Dolby Vision. In High Brightness Mode, the display can churn out up to 800 nits with a peak brightness of up to 1200 nits.
This makes the panel easily legible outdoors even under direct sunlight. The front is protected by scratch-resistant ceramic glass along with an oleophobic coating to keep smudges and fingerprints away.
The display of iPhones has always been top-notch. They are the only other brand that can directly compete with Samsung in terms of color, quality, and overall dynamics. The panel itself has excellent viewing angles, vivid colors, and a very responsive touch sampling.

Overall, even though there’s nothing new on display tech, it's still one of the best displays in any budget range right now.
Camera
The iPhone 14 features a dual 12 MP camera on the back. Seeing the 12 MP main sensor on the 14 might be a letdown for many as the iPhone has finally upgraded the main sensor to a 48 MP one on the Pro models.
The camera system on the 14 is exactly the same with albeit slightly better performance. The performance upgrade comes from the software optimization of the iOS 16 and general post-processing optimization.
Read iPhone 14 launch: Game-changing emergency services via satellite
The main sensor still features dual-pixel PDAF as well as a sensor shifting OIS which aids in the insane video stabilization on the iPhone 14.
The picture quality is still much superior to any competitor in its price bracket. The colors look sharp with a detailed dynamic range no matter what the lighting condition is. The variable shutter speed allows for smoother low and extreme low light images. Users would be hard-pressed to find grains or noises in artificial or low-light images.
Moving on to the videography, the phone can shoot at 4K at 60 fps in max settings. But the most impressive feature is the cinematic mode which hyper stabilizes videos to provide cinema-like video projections.
Read Android 14 to feature satellite connectivity support
The front camera is also the standard 12 MP like last year. The pictures look great with their details and sharpness. The cinematic mode has also been added to the front camera which is the only notable upgrade here.
Overall, the camera will churn out a bit more than last year’s iPhone 13. And no matter how you look at it, it's still an excellent camera system in its price bracket.
Processor and Performance
Perhaps the most shocking aspect regarding the iPhone 14 is the use of A 15 Bionic chipset, the same that was used on last year’s iPhone 13 and 13 Pro series.
Read International Roaming: How to use a Bangladeshi SIM card abroad
We have seen before that both the pro and the non-pro variant get the same processing power. But with the 14 series, Apple is creating a clear distinction in terms of processing power as well.
While the Pro series comes with a more enhanced A 16 Bionic, users opting for the cheaper 14 series will only be getting A 15. And much of that has to do with performance and global chip shortage rather than just a strategic move.
Over the years, Apple has produced chipsets that are far superior to any competitor in the market by a clear margin. And the gap has only widened in recent years with the Bionic series. So even though A 15 might seem like last year’s chip, it'll be powerful enough to power through anything that’s thrown at it.
Read Top 8 International Sim Cards in Bangladesh
The 5 Nm Hexa-core processor used 2 high-powered chips and supported 4 mid-tier chips. On paper, the A 15 falls slightly short of the A 16. Apple claims that the A 15 is still better than any android competitor chipset released in 2022 so users shouldn’t worry much about the performance.
You’ll get the same lighting, fast performance, smooth animations, and a proven chipset that can blaze through even the most demanding tasks.
Battery and Charge Time
the iPhone's battery amount isn’t the best indicator of its performance. Even though the iPhone 14 features a 3279 mAh battery, the high optimization of the A 15 allows the device to run for 8 to 10 hours continually. The device also has fast charging capabilities which can go from 0 to 50% in 30 minutes with supported fast chargers.

Price of iPhone 14
The base variant of the iPhone 14 with 128 storage options comes at 799 USD which roughly translates to 83,458 BDT ( 1 USD = 104.45). However, the pricing may vary depending on supply tax and other policies when it becomes available in Bangladesh.
Final Words
Like every year, Apple’s September event 2022 has been designated to launch the latest iPhone series. But with tech reaching a saturation point, it’s becoming increasingly difficult, even for Apple, to come up with a notable and significant upgrade.
The iPhone 14 doesn’t really bring anything new to the iPhone lineup. In fact, the device is like a repackaged version of last year’s iPhone 13. While many might think of this as Apple becoming complacent, it still brings an overall package that can hardly be beaten at its price point. Speaking of price, it’s the same as last year so that’s another thing to consider as well.

Overall, the Apple iPhone 14 might feel like the same run-off-the-mill iPhone. But for anyone wishing to jump to iOS or upgrade from anything before iPhone 11, now’s the perfect time to grab an iPhone 14.
