Man United win League Cup to end 6-year wait for trophy
Manchester United’s six-year wait for a trophy is over after beating Newcastle 2-0 to win the League Cup on Sunday.
United manager Erik ten Hag has wasted no time in guiding the club to silverware just 10 months after being hired.
Casemiro headed United in front in the 33rd minute of the final at Wembley Stadium and Sven Botman’s own-goal made it 2-0 in the 39th.
It is United’s first trophy since winning a League Cup and Europa League double under Jose Mourinho in 2017.
The victory keeps alive Ten Hag’s four-pronged challenge this season, with his team in contention for the Premier League title and still competing in both the Europa League and FA Cup.
For Newcastle, the wait for a first major domestic trophy since winning the FA Cup in 1955 goes on.
The Saudi Arabian-backed club mounted a fightback in the second half, but could not find a breakthrough goal, with David de Gea keeping a club record 181st clean sheet for United.
While Ten Hag and United’s fans will have their sights on bigger prizes than the League Cup, it could prove to be an important platform to build on after watching fierce rivals Manchester City and Liverpool dominate English football in recent years.
Newcastle arrived at Wembley also hoping for a first major trophy since Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund bought the club in 2021.
The sense of anticipation from both sets of supporters was unmistakable ahead of kickoff, with each hoping to see an end to their respective trophy droughts as Newcastle fans waved a sea of black-and-white flags against the opposing red scarves of United.
United have not had to wait for anything like as long as Newcastle for major success. In terms of the club’s storied past, though, a six-year run has felt like a crisis to fans brought up on iconic former manager Alex Ferguson’s all-conquering teams.

There is growing belief among the club’s fans that Ten Hag can bring back the glory years and he has certainly made an impressive start by delivering a trophy at the earliest possible point.
His team looked on course for victory from the moment Casemiro headed them in front when rising to meet Luke Shaw’s curled free kick.
For a man who has won it all with Real Madrid, including five Champions League titles, Casemiro’s delight at opening the scoring at Wembley was clear to see as he ran to the corner to celebrate with a broad smile on his face.
Perhaps there was also an element of relief given Newcastle had come close to taking the lead just before that goal when Alain Saint-Maximin’s close-range shot was blocked by De Gea.
They were 2-0 down to United shortly before halftime when Wout Weghorst played in Marcus Rashford on the left.
The in-form forward miscued his shot, but Botman’s attempted block saw the ball fly beyond Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius.
Rashford ran away in celebration, but it was adjudged to be an own-goal.
Newcastle’s players tried to force their way back into the match in the second half and made United retreat at times.
However, De Gea was not to be beaten and Bruno Fernandes might have extended United’s lead late when denied by Karius.

Will Messi's last performance in World Cup help Argentina win the trophy in Qatar?
The Greatest Show on Earth has come to the very end. Lionel Messi’s Argentina became the first team to qualify for the final after defeating Croatia 3-0 in the first semi-final of the World Cup. Now, fans are dreaming of seeing the trophy in Lionel Messi’s hand. The Qatar World Cup might be Lionel Messi’s last appearance in the tournament. Can Messi lift the trophy for Argentina after 36 years? Can Argentina win the 2022 Football World Cup?
Argentina’s Chances and Potentials to Win the World Cup
Argentina has reached another World Cup final after eight years. After winning Copa America in 2021 under Lionel Scaloni, Argentina started dreaming of winning the World Cup. But this dream once sounded like a struggle.
After losing to Saudi Arabia in the first match, many experts reminded Argentina of what happened to them in the 2002 World Cup in Asia. But, it seems Scaloni has learned from the past, which is proved by their performance in the last 5 matches of this World Cup. And apparently that the loss against Saudi Arabia has opened their eyes.
After that, Argentina won over Mexico, Poland, Australia, Netherlands, and Croatia. Now they are facing the toughest team of this World Cup, France, who are having an incredible pace with some of the best players such as Mbappe, Olivier Giroud, and Aurélien Tchouaméni. They will be a real obstacle to Argentina’s win.
However, Argentina has a very strong and talented team, and their recent performance has been consistent too. This year Argentina has played 16 international matches, including the World Cup. And Argentina has not lost any matches except for Saudi Arab’s upset. That being said, Argentina has been very consistent throughout the year and seems to win the World Cup at any cost.
Additionally, After 11 months of Argentina’s Copa America winning, they also won the intercontinental supremacy battle, ‘La Finalissima’, against the Euro winners Italy. After that, Argentina’s 2022 World Cup dream gained more strength. Argentina is now one of the biggest favorites.
Considering the opponent, France’s current pace and record, Argentina’s chance of winning the World Cup becomes low. But an incredible performance from some players such as Messi and Emiliano Martínez will surely increase Argentina’s Chances.

Which Players May Increase Argentina’s Chance of Winning?
Argentina has been dependent on Messi throughout the last decade. But this year, the team has reduced its dependency on Messi. And there are other players who can impact Argentina’s overall performance. But no one can ignore Messi. His presence gives the ultimate strength to the team.
However, Messi could not fulfill his dream in the previous four World Cups. This year Messi seems to be unstoppable. This football magician has been creating records throughout the tournament. Sometimes broke the late football legends Diego Maradona or Gabriel Batista’s records and sometimes jumped into their records. With his extraordinary performance, Messi won four man-of-the-match awards in this tournament. So, it will be difficult for Argentina to win if France stops Messi.
Apart from Messi, if one player can help Argentina, he is the goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. From COPA to the World Cup, Martinez has proved his class. He has played 24 matches for the national team so far. He has been playing regularly since the beginning of this World Cup.
But in the quarterfinal, He introduced himself more aesthetically, as he stopped the Netherlands in the quarterfinal. Power, perfect movement, impeccable skill, balance, and excellent diving are the qualities that a good goalkeeper should possess, and Emi has all of these qualities. Experts say the presence of these qualities or materials in Martinez is excellent. Argentina now has 100% on him.
Now experts are also reminding Argentina’s former goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea. Argentina’s Goycochea was the talk of the town in the 1990s, just as Martinez was about guarding Argentina’s goalpost.

Final Words
Argentina is always on the list of favorites in the World Cup, and having Lionel Messi in the team boosts their chances. After winning the World Cup in 1978 and 1986, Argentina played the finals in 1990 and 2014. This time, Argentina has lit the expectations based on Messi.
Yet a dismal performance in the 2018 World Cup and then a shaky Argentina in the first one and half years under Lionel Scaloni did not have any hope as ‘hot favorites for the World Cup. But everything changed when Argentina won the 2021 Copa America. Now, Argentina is one match away from proving themselves.

Who Stole the Jules Rimet World Cup Trophy?
The Jules Rimet Trophy is an iconic symbol of international football. It was the original prize for winning the FIFA World Cup and was first awarded in 1930. The trophy is named after Jules Rimet, the FIFA President who passed a vote to initiate the competition.
The trophy was designed by French sculptor Abel Lafleur and made of gold-plated sterling silver on a lapis lazuli base. However, the base was replaced in 1954 to accommodate more winner’s detail and made it taller. The trophy stands 35 centimeters (14 in) high and weighs 3.8 kilograms (8.4 lb). The Jules Rimet comprised a decagonal cup, which was supported by a winged figure representing Nike, the ancient Greek goddess of victory.
The Trophy got stolen in March 1966 prior to the FIFA World Cup 1966, which was recovered eventually.

Theft of the Jules Rimet Trophy?
On Sunday, March 20, 1966, the Jules Rimet Trophy disappeared from its display cabinet while a Sunday church service was being conducted in another part of the building. However, the thief never touched rare stamps estimated to have been worth over three million Pounds at that time and fled with just the trophy which had been valued at £ 30,0000 (around 3.5 crores in BDT).
On Monday, March 21, Joe Mears, the Chairman of the Football Association, received a ransom note from a person who claimed himself as ‘Jackson.’ Jackson was not about to let this prized possession get away. He demanded 15,000 pounds (more than 17.5 lacs in BDT) for its return and even provided photos as proof of the trophy’s possession in case there were any questions that might arise if he really had it.
The handover was scheduled to take place in front of Stamford Bridge which isis Chelsea’s home stadium.

How was the Jules Rimet Football World Cup Trophy Recovered?
An undercover detective posing as ‘Mears’ lured Jackson using scraps of paper and fake money and tried to catch him to lead the detectives to the stolen trophy. However, Jackson fled realizing something was wrong.
Jackson was finally caught after a dramatic pursuit and revealed to be Edward Betchley, the petty thief with prior records. However, he claimed he did not steal it himself but only acted as a middleman for £500 (Nearly 60 thousand in BDT) for a vague individual who referred him to ‘The Pole.’ However, the trophy was not recovered right away. Later Jackson had two years of jail, but the police could never track ‘The Pole.’
The search for the trophy continued. David Corbett, a Thames lighterman (barge operator), went out for a walk with his dog Pickles on March 27, exactly one week after the original theft. The Jules Rimet trophy was discovered when Pickles began to sniff something (a parcel wrapped with old newspaper and tied with string) under the hedge of Corbett’s house. Corbett then opened the parcel and recognized it. After that, he handed it to Gipsy Hill police station.

History of FIFA Football World Cup Trophy
What makes this trophy even more valuable is its history and significance. First introduced in 1974, it has been awarded to World Cup winning teams for over 40 years now. Only six countries have managed to claim it multiple times: Brazil (5 times), Germany (3 times), Italy (2 times), Argentina (2 times), Uruguay (2 times) and Spain (1 time).
In the past, the winning team would keep possession of the trophy until the final draw of the next tournament. However, that is no longer the case. Now, each winner of the World Cup receives a gold plated bronze replica than solid gold. The original trophy remains in FIFA’s possession and is brought out for display at each subsequent World Cup tournament.
So, while it may not be solid gold, there's no doubt that the FIFA's Football World Cup Trophy holds immense value both monetarily and sentimentally.
