Mirsarai tragedy: 11 tourists laid to rest
Eleven people, who died in a train accident while returning to their homes after visiting Khoiyachora Waterfall in the hills of Mirsarai upazila on Friday, were laid to rest on Saturday.
All of them were laid to rest in their respective areas in Hathazari upazila, said Shahidul Alam, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO).
Around 10.30am, a namaz-e-janaza of five of the deceased was held on Amanbazar Sumdia Government Primary school grounds in Hathazari upazila.
Besides, the namaz-e-janaza of four other victims was also held in their respective villages on Saturday while those of two others were held on Friday night.
The mortal remains of all the 11 people -- nine students, one teacher and the microbus driver -- were handed over to their families on Friday.
How the accident occurred?
The tragedy occurred when a speeding express train rammed into the microbus carrying the tourists at a level crossing in Mirsharai upazila on Friday.

In fact, they met with the accident while returning to their respective homes after visiting the popular waterfall in the hills of Mirsarai.
While 11 of them died at the scene, six others were injured, police and fire service officials said.
The victims were identified as Golam Mostafa Niru, 26, the microbus driver, Mohammad Hasan, 17, son of Ilias Bhutto of Chikondandi union, Ziaul Haque Sajib, 22, son of Abdul Hamid of Khondokar Para, Wahidul Alam Jisan, 23, son of Jane Alam of Aziz Membar Bari, Ridwan Chowdhury, 22, a teacher of the ‘R&J’ coaching centre and son of Badsha Chowdhury of Majid Abbas Chowdhury Bari, Sagar, 17, son of Pavez of the area, Iqbal Hossain Maruf, 17, son of Abdul Mabud of Wadud Master Bari, Moshahab Ahmed Hisham, 16, son of Mozaffar Ahmed of ward number 6 of the upazila, Tasmir Hasan, 17, son of Parvez of Abdul Aziz Bari, Md Mahim, 17, son of Mansur Alam, and Mostafa Masud Rakib, 19, son of Motahar Hossain of Abu Musa Khan Bari.
The six injured are microbus helper Taukid Ibn Shawon, 20, and students -- Md Mahim, 18, Tanveer Hasan Hriday, 18, Md Emon, 19, Tasmir Pavel, 16, and Md Saikat, 18. They are undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College and Hospital.
“The microbus got on the rail track breaking through a bamboo barrier at the level crossing before it was hit by the train,” said Ansar Ali, transportation officer of Bangladesh Railway (east).
The divisional railway authorities on Friday formed a five-member committee to investigate the accident.
Bangladesh Railway (east) Divisional Transport Officer (DTO) Ansar Ali has been made the head of the probe committee. "We will have to submit the report at the earliest," he said.
The Railway police has already detained gateman Md Saddam Hussain, who was in charge of Khoiyachora level crossing at the time of the accident, said Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Mirsharai police station.

Eminent journalist Gaffar Chowdhury laid to rest
“Amar Bhai'er Rokte Rangano Ekushey February” famed eminent lyricist, journalist and political analyst Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury was laid to eternal rest at Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard in Mirpur Saturday afternoon.
The prominent Bangladeshi-British writer and columnist was buried at 5:30pm.
Gaffar Chowdhury’s body arrived in Dhaka by a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from London, where he died of a cardiac arrest.

Gaffar Chowdhury to be laid to rest in Mirpur Saturday
Prominent Bangladeshi-British writer and columnist Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury will be laid to rest at Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard in Mirpur on Saturday.
Gaffar Chowdhury's final journey will start from London in a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight and the body will reach Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11am on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.
Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque will receive Gaffar Chowdhury's mortal remains at the airport on behalf of the Bangladesh government.

His body will be kept at Central Shaheed Minar from 1pm to 3pm for the government to give a guard of honour and the people to pay their last tributes.
His Namaz-e-Janaza will be held at Dhaka University Central Mosque at 3.30pm and then the mortal remains will be taken to Jatiya Press Club (JPC) for the journalists to pay homage at 4pm.
Gaffar Chowdhury will be buried at Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard in Mirpur at 5.30pm.
Gaffar Chowdhury went to London in 1974 for his wife's treatment, thanks to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

On May 19, the veteran writer died of a cardiac arrest at a hospital in London. He was 88.
The Bangladeshi-British community and other admirers paid their last respects to Gaffar Chowdhury -- best known for writing the lyrics of "Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano" -- following his first Namaz-e-Janaza held at London's Brick Lane mosque the next day.

Mushtari Shafi laid to eternal rest in Chattogram
Eminent litterateur and freedom fighter Begum Mushtari Shafi, also known as "Shaheedjaya" (wife of a martyr), was laid to rest with state honours at Chaitanyagali graveyard, Chattogram Wednesday.
Earlier, her namaz-e-janaza was held at Jamiatul Falah National Mosque Ground after Zuhr prayers.
Thousands of people including, eminent personalities, political leaders, social and cultural activists attended the janaza.
People from all walks of life paid their last respects to Begum Mushtari at the Central Shaheed Minar in Chattogram at 11:30am. A team of Chattogram Metropolitan Police gave a guard of honour to the freedom fighter there.
Freedom fighters Nurul Absar, Balagat Ullah; woman leader Nurjahan Khan, Professor Rita Dutta, dramatist Ahmed Iqbal Haider, writer Anwara Alam, and poets Ashish Sen, Abul Momen paid homage to Begum Mushtari, along with a host of other people.
Monday, Begum Mushtari, also president of Udichi Shilpigosthi Chattogram unit, breathed her last at 5pm at Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka.
The 84-year-old was undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of the hospital for various complications, including kidney and blood infections.
Born on January 15, 1938, in West Bengal, Begum Mushtari participated in the 1952 Language Movement. Her ancestral home is in the Faridpur district.
In the 1960s, she founded the women's organisation called Bandhabi Sangha in Chattogram.
From this organisation, she published a regular magazine, "Bandhabi," and started a printing house called Meyeder Press, which were considered as remarkable activities at a time when examples of women activism were rare in society.

Her husband doctor Mohammad Shafi and younger brother Ehsanul Haque Ansari were assassinated by the Pakistani military on April 7, 1971, during the Bangladesh Liberation War.
With that deep grief in her heart, Mushtari worked at Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra as a voice artiste, till December 16, 1971, to inspire the freedom fighters.
She preserved the memories and her experiences of the Liberation War in some of her notable books – "Women of Chittagong in the War of Liberation," "Letter to Jahanara Imam," and "Swadhinata Amar Roktojhora Din"
For her outstanding role during the Liberation War, the Bangla Academy awarded Mushtari a fellowship in 2016. She also received the state award Rokeya Padak in literature last year.

Dr Enamul Haque laid to rest
Eminent actor and playwright Dr Enamul Haque was laid to rest at Banani graveyard in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.
Earlier, the Ekushey Padak winning actor’s body was taken to the Central Shaheed Minar where people from all walks of life paid their last respect to him from 11 am to 12 noon, said Golam Kuddus, president of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote.
Placing a wreath on the coffin of Dr Enamul, State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said, "Enamul Haque’s departure is an irreparable loss for us but his works for building a non-communal Bangladesh will show us ways in future."
Information Minister Hasan Mahmud, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Md. Akhtaruzzaman, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Gonoshasthya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, among others, paid their tributes to Enamul Haque.
Later his body was taken to Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) where Dr Enmaul worked for over four decades.

Enmul Haque died on Monday afternoon while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital.

26 Bangladeshis killed in Libya laid to rest
All 26 Bangladeshi nationals, who were killed in a gun attack in Libya on Thursday, have been buried at Mizdah.
M Ashraful Islam, Counsellor (Labour wing) at Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, confirmed it to UNB.
The Bangladeshi citizens were killed while 11 others were injured in a gun attack by some human traffickers on Thursday in the desert town of Mizdah, some 180km from Tripoli.
Bangladesh had communicated with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to make arrangements for the bodies of the victims and sought compensation for their families.
Bangladesh has also sought information on the human traffickers and demanded punishment of those involved in human trafficking and killing after their arrest.
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Friday said six out of 11 injured Bangladesh citizens have fully recovered and Bangladesh Mission in Libya is in touch with them to get further details on the incident.
On Saturday, Bangladesh released names of 23 of those killed.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with information from Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli, also provided the identities of the injured.
The 23 deceased are -- Sujan and Kamrul from Gopalganj; Jakir Hossain, Jewel, Firuz, Jewel-2, Manik, Asadul, Aynal Mollah, Monir, Sajib, Shaheen, and Shamim from Madaripur; Arfan from Dhaka; Lal Chand from Magura; Rajon, Rahim, Shakil, Sakib, Akash, Shohag and Muhammad Ali from Kishoreganj; and Rakibul from Jashore.
