Dhaka court sentences Arav Khan to 10 years' jail in arms case
A Dhaka court on Tuesday (May 09, 2023) sentenced Mohammad Rabiul Islam alias Arav Khan, a Dubai-based gold dealer, to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment in an arms case filed in January 2015.
Judge Murshid Ahmed of Dhaka Metro Special Tribunal-14 passed the order this noon, in absence of Arav Khan.
In addition to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, Arav Khan was sentenced to a fine of Tk 10,000, in default of which he will have to serve another three months' imprisonment.
Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) AKM Salahuddin confirmed the development.

Earlier, on March 28, the court heard the testimonies of 10, out of 20, witnesses. Arav Khan could not claim his innocence as he was absconding.
According to the prosecution, Arav Khan was arrested in January 2015, with a loaded revolver from Dhaka's Moghbazar area as he went to his father-in-law Sekendar Ali’s house to collect money at gunpoint.
On the same day, Sujan Kumar Kundu, the then Sub-inspector of DB West's Car Theft Prevention and Rescue Team, filed a case against Arav Khan with Ramna Model Police Station under arms act.
DB Police Sub-inspector Sheikh Hasan Mohammad Mostafa Sarwar, also the investigating officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet against Arav Khan to the court on March 1, 2015. The tribunal framed charges against him on May 10.

He was granted bail in the case on March 14, 2018. The court issued an arrest warrant against Arav Khan on October 24, 2018 declaring him as "fugitive".

Arms case against Arav: Court sets April 13 for self-defence hearing
A Dhaka court on Tuesday fixed April 13 for hearing the statement of Rabiul Islam alias Arav Khan, a Dubai-based gold dealer and a fugitive in police officer murder case, in his self-defence in an arms case filed in 2015.
Judge of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-6 Murshid Ahmed fixed the date after the hearing the statements from the witnesses in the case.
Advocate AKM Salauddin, a counsel for the state, said, “We expect that Arav Khan will surrender before the court by April 13 and give his deposition in self-defence.”
The court recorded statements of 10 witnesses out of 20.
According to the prosecution, Arav Khan went to his in-law’s house on January 28, 2015 to realise some money after issuing threat to his father-in-law Sekendar Ali. Later, he was arrested from his in-law’s house along with a revolver.

Sub-inspector of DB police Sujon Kumar Kundu filed a case under the Arms Act against Arav.
On March 1, 2015, police submitted chargesheet against Arav in the case.
On May 10, 2015, the trial in the arms against Arav started. He also secured bail from the court on March 14, 2018 and since then he remained absconding.
On October 24, 2018, a court issued warrant for his arrest in the case.
On March 24, Interpol finally issued a red notice against Arav on its website in red notice list.
Interpol has accepted Bangladesh police's request to issue a red notice against him.
Earlier, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on March 18 said that efforts were underway to bring Arav Khan alias Rabiul Islamto the country through the international police agency Interpol.

Interpol issues red notice against fugitive Arav Khan
Interpol on Friday has finally issued a red notice against Arav Khan alias Rabiul Islam, a Dubai-based gold dealer and fugitive suspect in the murder of a Bangladeshi police officer, on its website in red notice list.
With this, the names of 63 Bangladeshis have so far been put in the list.
The International Criminal Police Organization uploaded the details on fugitive Arav Khan by issuing the red notice three days after Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun at a programme in Chattogram told media that the Interpol accepted the request letter sent by the Bangladesh police to issue a red notice against him.

In the red list, Arav’s picture, gender, birthplace, birthdate, age, nationality and the allegations are available.
Though he went to the United Arab Emirates with an Indian passport, his nationality was mentioned in the list as a Bangladeshi.
On last Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Seheli Sabrin told reporters in the weekly briefing that Arav has been under watch there.

She said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will extend required assistance if the Home Ministry seeks.
On March 16, a senior Detective Branch official said cricketer Shakib al Hasan and content creator Hero Alam who participated in the inauguration of Arav Jewellers in Dubai may be questioned for the sake of investigation.
On March 18, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that efforts were underway to bring Arav Khan to the country through the international police agency Interpol.
As the allegations of having a link between former IGP Benzir Ahmed and Arav Khan surfaced, the ex-police boss denied knowing the fugitive in a Facebook post on his verified account on May 19.
"I want to inform you all that I do not know anyone by the name of 'Aarav alias Rabiul alias Hridoy'. I do not even have a primary acquaintance with him," the former police chief wrote in his status.
On April 11, 2019, a chargesheet was submitted against Arav Khan and nine others in the murder case of former inspector of Special Branch of police Mamun Emran Khan.

Arav Khan is under watch in Dubai: Foreign Ministry
The Ministry of Home Affairs and Bangladesh Mission in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are working over the issues related to Rabiul Islam alias Arav Khan, a fugitive in the police officer murder case, says a spokesperson.
"He is under watch there," Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Seheli Sabrin told reporters in the weekly briefing on Thursday (March 23, 2023) afternoon.
She said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will extend required assistance if the Home Ministry seeks.
Rabiul Islam alias Arav Khan, a fugitive in the police officer murder case, has not been arrested in Dubai, said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam on Tuesday.

“No, he has not been arrested….it’s an event that’s unfolding. You will know in time,” he told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs while responding to a question.
The State Minister said all he can say that there is no scope for any Bangladeshi accused to stay free in a country if he is granted political asylum or for any reason he identifies himself.

Interpol accepted ‘red notice’ request against Arav Khan, says IGP
Interpol has accepted the request letter sent by the Bangladesh police to issue a red notice against Arav Khan alias Rabiul Islam, a Dubai-based gold dealer and fugitive suspect in the murder of a police officer.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun revealed the information at an event in Chattogram on Monday.
UNB couldn't independently confirm the matter.

“We requested to issue a red notice against him. Interpol has accepted it,” said the IGP.
“We are working on the issue. We can’t disclose the details at this moment,” he added.

Earlier, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said on Saturday (March 18) that efforts were underway to bring Arav Khan alias Rabiul Islam, the fugitive accused in the police officer murder case, to the country through the international police agency Interpol.
