Russell Domingo Steps Down as Bangladesh Head Coach
Jalal Yunus, Chairman of the Cricket Operation Department of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), has confirmed that Russell Domingo has resigned from his role as the Head Coach of the Bangladesh National Cricket Team.
Domingo was appointed as the head coach of Bangladesh in 2019, shortly after Steve Rhodes was released from his role following the team's disappointing performance at the World Cup 2019 in England.
Jalal revealed that on Tuesday, he had sent a resignation letter with immediate effect and without giving any reason for his decision, but expressing gratitude for the support bestowed upon him by the board.

“He wished the Bangladesh team a better future,” Jalal said.
Doming had been under immense pressure for his lack of success as the coach of Bangladesh in the T20Is.
Consequently, he was dismissed from his role as head coach of the T20 team before the last Asian Cup.
Jalal announced that Bangladesh will appoint a new coach for both Tests and ODIs ahead of the upcoming home series against England starting on March 1 in Dhaka.

Domingo is still the head coach of Tigers:BCB
After a few chaotic hours of speculated resignation of the head coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team, Russel Domingo, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed that he is very much on the job.
Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, the chief executive officer of BCB, said they didn't get any resignation letter from Domingo and don’t believe that he has quit the post.
BCB’s response came after a Bengali-language daily in Dhaka reported that Domingo , speaking from his home in South Africa, confirmed he would no longer work for BCB. Domingo is now on leave.
“We think there is a misunderstanding between the newspaper and Domingo,” Nizam Uddin told the media on Thursday. “Domingo was recently presented in a press conference in Bangladesh where the BCB president said that Domingo is still our head coach and he will continue working for us.”
In a rare move Bangladesh has sent the national team to play the Asia Cup in the UAE without a head coach. Instead of Domingo, Bangladesh added Sridharan Sriram to the team— not as a head coach, but as a T20 technical consultant.
BCB has confirmed that Sridharan, a former Indian player, will continue in the role till the T20 World Cup later this year. The board has also confirmed that Domingo will work as the head coach of the Bangladesh team in Tests and ODIs only.

“The way media reported was not completely right,” Nizam said. “There was a misunderstanding and Domingo is embarrassed for it. He is expected to join his job soon and he is expected to tour the UAE with the Bangladesh A team soon.”
Meanwhile, Sridharan will call the shots of Bangladesh team during the Asia Cup. BCB chief Nazmul Hasan and director Jalal Yunus will also stay with the team in the UAE during this event along with the other coaching staff.

Sridharan to call the shots in Asia Cup as consultant
In a decisive shift, newly-appointed technical consultant Sridharan Sriram will call the shots for Bangladesh during the upcoming Asia Cup, and overall in T20Is going forward, BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon confirmed to the media today.
Head Coach Russell Domingo, will now work concentrate on Tests and ODIs - as such, he is not even going to be with the team in UAE for the regional T20I honours.
Last week, the BCB confirmed the appointment of Sridharan— a former Indian player and coach of several IPL teams.
“As of now, we have no head coach during the Asia Cup,” Nazmul told the media on Monday. “Domingo will remain our coach in Tests in ODIs. We have a fielding coach, batting coach and other staff. Sridharan will give us the plan to do well in T20Is, now why do we need a head coach?”

In an unconventional move, the BCB president said the coaching staff will be under the leadership of himself and other directors of the board who will be travelling with the team. UNB has learnt that the board president and Jalal Yunus, the chairman of the BCB cricket operations committee, are confirmed to travel with the team during the Asia Cup.
“We may have different captains in white-ball and red-ball cricket,” Nazmul added. “We also need different teams in the different formats of the game with different coaching panels for our teams. Unless we have all of these, we are not prepared well.”
This is not the first time that the BCB is thinking to appoint different captains for different formats of the game. Until Mominul Haque was removed from the Test captaincy, Bangladesh had three different captains in the three different formats of cricket.
While Mominul was the Test captain, Mahmudullah Riyad and Tamim Iqbal were the captains of T20Is and ODIs respectively. But some dismal results led to Mominul's resignation from the longest format, and Riyad's time was up in the shortest one.

The Bangladesh team will fly to the UAE on August 23 to play in the Asia Cup. A total of six teams are going to play in the biggest cricketing event in Asia. In the group stage, Bangladesh will take on Afghanistan and Sri Lanka on August 29 and September 1.

Batters should learn from West Indies: Domingo
Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo has said the Bangladeshi batters should learn from the way the West Indies batters have played in the ongoing Test in St Lucia.
At the end of day two, West Indies were leading by 106 runs with five wickets in hand. Despite losing four wickets in 132 runs, West Indies batters made a great comeback in the fifth and sixth wicket stands— a sort of performance that Bangladesh have failed to produce for a long time.
In the first innings of the ongoing Test, Bangladesh posted only 234 runs. All of Bangladesh’s top five batters managed a good start, but they failed to continue on that.

The tailenders, Ebadot Hossain and Shoriful Islam, scored 21 and 26 respectively which helped the visitors pass the 200-run mark. Had they not scored these runs, Bangladesh would have been bundled for a total of less than 200.
“There’s a lot of players searching for form, searching for runs. The only way to get through it is to bat for long periods of time. Lots of the 30s and 40s, the odd 50. Nobody is doing what Kyle Mayers is doing,” Domingo told in the post-day press conference.
West Indies posted 100 runs in the opening stand, but while scoring the next 32 runs, they lost four wickets. From there, Jermaine Blackwood (40), Kyle Mayers (126*), and Joshua Da Silva (26) brought the hosts to 340 for five.

“We are good for one session and then we have a one really bad session,” Domingo said. “Guys were not patient. They couldn’t string together enough tight overs as we did in the first session. They were only searching for wickets.”
Bangladesh lost the first Test against the hosts in Antigua. This series is a part of the ICC World Test Championship. The Tigers have only one win this cycle of this event.

Domingo eyes to grab the series in 2nd ODI vs Afghanistan
Bangladesh will go all-out to win the second ODI against Afghanistan on Friday and take the three-match series 2-0, said the team’s head coach Russell Domingo.
The match will be played Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, where the Tigers stunned the visitors with a four-wicket victory after a great fight-back by Afif Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
The duo orchestrated a 174-run stand between them to guide the Tigers to a historic win.
The Tigers chased down a moderate target of 216 which had become harder after losing six wickets in just 45 runs.
In that match, Bangladesh conceded 18 extra runs with 13 wides. Domingo said it’s the point where Bangladesh need to focus more and improve further.

“It was a great match, but tomorrow is more important than yesterday,” the Bangladesh coach said on Thursday.
“We conceded 13 wides, we missed a catch and we lost six wickets in just 45 runs in the previous match. So we have to improve further. We have to play good cricket,” he said.
Bangladesh players came to this series after the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). They expected an easy win in the series opener which did not really happen despite showing some good bowling after being sent to bowl first.
Led by Mustafizur Rahman, Bangladesh restricted Afghanistan to 215 in 49.1 overs. But the batters failed to have a good start. They lost too many wickets to Fazalhaq Farooqi, a left-arm pacer. The hosts lost six wickets in just 45 runs.
“It may sound unbelievable, but it was true that I had kept hope alive ,” Domingo recalled the moment Bangladesh lost the sixth wicket in just 45 runs.
“Mehidy has a Test century and also played very well in BPL, and Afif is a cool-headed batter. So we thought it’s still possible if this two stay steady and play without added pressure.”
Bangladesh coach said the belief got stronger when Bangladesh needed 60 runs to win as the Afghanistan team was lacking more options in their bowling side and the wicket was behaving like a familiar one.

In his seven previous matches, Afif had only a fifty. But he has always been considered a batter who can keep the scoreboard afloat in any situation of the match, and the southpaw proved it in a crucial time.
“I want Afif to continue batting at number seven,” Domingo said when he was asked if he thinks to change the batting position of Afif.
“We have a genuine wicketkeeper who bats at the top of the order, and we also have a genuine spinner who also bats there. In this situation, Aiff is the best choice to bat at number seven, and we are not thinking to change his position now.”
Afghanistan’s premium spinner Rashid Khan was the main threat to Bangladesh batters, and along with him, Mujeeb Ur Rahman was also a big challenge for the hosts' batters. But in the end, they were overshadowed by the young pacer Farooqi.
Bangladesh coach did not hesitate to praise Farooqi for his wonderful spell. He said the Bangladesh batters should play him carefully in the next matches. “He was outstanding in the first match. Those deliveries that dismissed Liton (Das), Mushfiqur (Rahim) and Yasir (Al) were so good. Our batters need to play him well.”
This series is a part of the World Cup Super League. Bangladesh played 13 matches so far in this league and won nine of them. If the Tigers win the next match, they will be at the top of the table with 10 wins surpassing England who have nine wins from 15 matches so far.

Series win against New Zealand to inspire future Tigers: Domingo
Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo said a series win against New Zealand will inspire the future generation of Bangladesh cricketers to do well in alien conditions.
He said the win in the first Test was the result of the hard work of the players over the last few months during their tough time.
Bangladesh are all set to take on New Zealand in the second Test on January 9 in Christchurch. The weather in Christchurch is cold and the wicket is also faster than the Tigers had one in Tauranga. So the second Test will be a tough one for the Tigers, believes Doming.
“They now want to do something that no other Bangladesh side has done before and that is to win a series in New Zealand. They are trying to do something very special that can inspire another generation of Bangladeshi cricketers,” Domingo said on Saturday ahead of the second Test.

Right-arm fast bowler Ebadot Hossain was the main architect of Bangladesh’s maiden win against New Zealand at their home.
Bangladesh never won an international fixture in New Zealand despite playing 32 matches across formats before the first Test of the ongoing series.
“It’s been a very cool couple of days for the boys. The guys really enjoyed it because they know they had a hard time before in New Zealand. And New Zealand are one of the best sides in the world. You have to play really good cricket to compete with them and beat them. We had a tough few months in all formats,” Domingo added.
Ebadot averaged more than 80 before the first Test in Tauranga. Given his performance in Tests, he was the worst pacer in Bangladesh’s armory. But now, he has become the fast-bowling sensation in Bangladesh, and probably, in the other parts of the cricketing world as well.
Domingo said it was a reward for Ebadot and for the hard work he has done over the last few years.

Bangladesh are expecting a tougher challenge in Christchurch where they have to negotiate with a faster wicket and challenging condition. But Domingo believes the boys are pumped up to the challenge.
“It’s not often when Bangladeshi pacers can hope for the wicket with some grass on it,” he said. “We have also got some quality bowlers in the squad. We have three high-quality bowlers and they are pretty confident. If we do get early wickets hopefully we can do some damage.”
Along with Ebadot, Taskin Ahmed and Shorfiul Islam have also put their best foot forward in the first match taking three wickets each. Domingo said if they can come up together it will be tough for the hosts to earn an easy win against the confident Tigers.
This series is a part of the ongoing World Test Championship. In the previous cycle of this event, Bangladesh failed to win any match while they also had a bad start to the new cycle when they lost to Pakistan at home. But they bounced back strongly in New Zealand, and for the first time, they are hoping to win a series against the Blackcaps in New Zealand— a rare fate for any Asian team.

Mushfiqur opts to quit wicket-keeping in T20Is: Domingo
Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo has said that Mushfqiur Rahim is no longer interested in keeping the wickets in T20Is.
As per the initial plan of the Bangladesh team, Mushfiqur was set to keep the wickets in the third and fourth T20Is in the ongoing series against New Zealand.
But spectators were surprised to see Nurul Hasan keeping the wicket in the third match instead of Mushfiqur.
“There has been a change. Initially, after speaking to Mushy, he was going to keep after the second game. But he told me he probably doesn’t want to keep wickets in T20s anymore, so we have to move on,” Domingo said on Sunday after the third match that Bangladesh lost by 52 runs.
“I don’t think Mushfiq’s desire to stand behind the wickets in this format is great anymore. We have to focus on Sohan, and possibly let him do those duties going into the competition,” the Bangladesh head coach added.

Mushfiqur has been under scrutiny for while due to his wicket-keeping lapses over the last few years. He was advised by the coaches to give up the keeping and focus more on his batting.
But Mushfiqur has always been reluctant to leave wicket keeping. He instead has been saying that wicket-keeping helps him understand the wicket better and bat well.
Back in 2005, Mushfiqur had been added to the Bangladesh team as a specialist batsman.
But after the retirement of Khaled Mashud the then number one wicketkeeper of Bangladesh, Mushfiqur put on the gloves. He left the wicket-keeping in Tests for a while now. It is Liton Das, who replaced Mushfiuqr as the wicketkeeper in Tests.
As a fielder in the outfield, Mushfiqur has been doing well in the ongoing series. He grabbed four catches in three matches so far.

Domingo's contract likely to be extended
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is considering renewing the contract of national team head coach Russell Domingo till the T20 World Cup 2022.
As per the ongoing agreement, Russell will remain the coach of the national team till the T20 World Cup 2021, scheduled in the UAE and Oman from October 2021, BCB President Nazmul Hasan told the media Sunday.
"There is a possibility that his contract will be extended. We are likely to extend it by one year. However, we are yet to discuss it with Russell. We need to discuss it more, and after that, we will make a final decision," he added.

A one-year extension means the South African coach will continue as Bangladesh head coach till the T20 World Cup 2022, which will take place in Australia.
Russell was welcomed to Bangladesh with a Test-defeat to Afghanistan in 2019. After that, Bangladesh played 47 international matches and won 25.
The South African coach's biggest success, as the head coach of Bangladesh, came recently when the Tigers beat Australia 4-1 in a five-match T20 series.

Tigers to take on Sri Lanka with an eye on WC 2023
The Tigers would play the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka – set to begin Sunday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium – with an eye on the World Cup 2023, Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo said Saturday.
Bangladesh have played six matches of the World Cup Super League and won three. They will have to end this event as one of the best seven teams to be directly qualified for the World Cup in India.
"Winning right now is always important but you have also got to have one eye on the future. Sometimes you need to be a little bit aware of that, and not always focus on the immediate future or past," Domingo said at a virtual press conference.
"This is an important series and points are up for grabs. However, the development of the team going forward is equally important. Who knows, in two years, you might not have Shakib, Tamim, Riyad or Mushfiqur available. And you have got to make sure that you develop some other players who can step into those roles," the South African coach said.

Ban v SL: Domingo expects quick runs on third morning
Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo says he is expecting some quick runs on the morning of the third day of Kandy Test to put more pressure on hosts Sri Lanka.
The play of the second day ended early due to bad light when Bangladesh were batting at 474 for four, with Mushfiqur Rahim (43*) and Liton Das (25*) at the crease.
“We’ll discuss it (how many runs are safe) overnight but we need to get some quick runs tomorrow morning,” Domingo told the media through a virtual press conference at the end of day two. “If we can get around 520, it gives us a good opportunity to put them under some pressure.”

Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque have struck centuries. While it was the maiden ton for Najmul, Mominul recorded his first in away Tests. Domingo lauded both for their performance.
“I think there’s been a lot of discussion about how he goes about his innings. Being a bit more patient, leaving a few more balls, cutting out certain scoring areas. He has played a fantastic innings. I’m really pleased with him. He’s worked really hard on his game in the last couple of months,” Domingo said about Shanto.
“I think Mominul understands his game really well. He’s a very calm person. I think his demeanour lends him to be a very organised Test batsman. He’s meticulous in his preparation. I think he’s a fantastic Test batsman and he’s trying his best to lead the side. He got a hundred against the West Indies, and followed up with a hundred here again,” Domingo said.

The wicket of Kandy is mostly friendly to the batsmen. In the first two days, bowlers hardly got anything from the wicket.
“Winning the Test is a long way away. It’s not something we’re thinking about at the moment. Our main focus is to play well in the first session tomorrow. There’s a lot of hard work ahead of us to even consider thinking of winning this Test,” Domingo added.
