Two madrasa students drown in Siddhirganj
Two madrasa students on Monday drowned after going to a lake for a swim at Siddhirganj in Narayanganj.
The deceased were identified as Monirul (15) and Shuvo (15), students of class VII at Godnail Bagpara Alim Madrasa.
Their bodies were recovered from the DND lake near the No. 1 bridge in the Barma Stand Nayapara area at around 6 am on Tuesday (May 12).
Police said the incident occurred on Monday afternoon after the students finished their examinations, played football with friends and later went to the DND lake for swimming, after which they went missing.
Monirul’s father is Mohammad Zakir, and his family hails from Palla village under Mohammadpur police station in Magura district. The family currently lives in a rented house at Choudhury Bari in Bhuiyapara area under Ward No. 8 of Narayanganj City Corporation.
Shuvo son of Mizan Shikder is originally from Morich Buniya area in Patuakhali district, and they lived in the Moonlight area under Ward No. 6 of Narayanganj City Corporation.
Sub-Inspector Mosharraf Hossain of Siddhirganj Police Station said five friends went to the DND lake for swimming after playing football at Navana field. While three returned home safely, Monirul and Shuvo went missing.
He said family members searched different areas throughout the night. In the early hours of Tuesday, locals spotted the bodies floating in the lake and informed police.
Police later recovered the bodies and prepared inquest reports. As no complaint was filed by the families, the bodies were handed over to the relatives.

For the past two months, the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) authority has kept the crossing point at Dhaka-bound road from Kanchpur Bridge in Siddhirganj to Kuwait Plaza area closed. As a result, passengers have been crossing roads by jumping the lane's divider.
According to the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), the four-lane Dhaka-bound road from Kanchpur Bridge in Siddhirganj to Kuwait Plaza area was divided into two lanes with high dividers to stop risky road crossing and to ensure long-distance vehicles' direct route to Dhaka.
A gate was kept open in front of the RHD office for the movement of passengers from long-distance lanes to regional lanes, but the RHD authorities closed it two months ago.

Narayanganj RHD's Executive Engineer Shahana Ferdous said, they tried several times to enforce the movement of bus services in the designated service line with Highway Police, but they failed to enforce it.
