Fortify Rights on Thursday said the Myanmar military junta has arbitrarily detained journalists, threatened others into hiding, and dictated proposed legislation that would severely curb media freedoms.

 

A Myanmar court has granted a police request to detain ousted leader Aung Sang Suu Kyi until Feb. 15 for illegally importing and using communications equipment, members of her National League for Democracy said Wednesday.

 

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the detention of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint and other political leaders on the eve of the opening session of the country's new Parliament.

Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won enough seats in Parliament to return to power for a second five-year term, official results released by the election commission showed Friday.

Myanmar’s ruling National League for Democracy party claimed Monday that it has won enough seats in Parliament to constitute an absolute majority and retain power. It made the claim even though the state Union Election Commission has not yet completed releasing results from Sunday’s election.

Myanmar kicked off its multi-party general elections on Sunday as over 37 million eligible voters went to polls across the country.

The wheels of international justice are finally turning as  two international courts are now examining whether Myanmar committed genocide and who should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity, said Human Rights Watch.
