A sub-inspector of police and a local BNP leader were killed and two other policemen injured when a covered van hit a police patrol team in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur early Friday. The deceased were identified as SI Mizanur Rahman of Kaliganj Police Station and Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Molla, organising secretary of the ward No. 2 unit of BNP in Kaliganj municipality. Inspector (Investigation) of Kaliganj Police Station Md Ashraful Islam said a police team, led by Mizanur, was conducting patrols on the Tongi-Ghorashal regional highway and serving arrest warrants. At one stage, the police stopped their vehicle in front of Government Kaliganj Sramik College and intercepted several suspected persons for questioning. Around 3:30am, an unidentified covered van rammed into them, leaving Mizanur, Probationary SI Javed Omar, driver constable Fazle Rabbi and BNP leader Rafiqul seriously injured. According to police, the covered van driver struck Mizanur and dragged him for about half a kilometre before leaving him beside the road and fleeing towards Ghorashal in Narsingdi. Locals rescued the injured and took them to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physician declared Rafiqul dead. Mizanur and Javed, who were critically injured, were later sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment. However, Mizanur succumbed to his injuries there in the morning. Rabbi was shifted to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for treatment. Police could not trace the covered van and its driver. It was not immediately clear why BNP leader Rafiqul was at the scene at the time of the incident. Additional Superintendent of Police (Kaliganj Circle) Sk Muttajul Islam and Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Zakir Hossain visited the scene after the incident.

A leader of Jatiyatabadi  Krishak Dal was hacked to death in Chattogram’s Barabkunda area of Sitakunda on Wednesday night.  The deceased was Md Nasir Uddin, 47, a resident of Hatilota village in Barabkunda union and organising secretary of Krishak Dal’s Sitakunda unit. Sitakunda Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mojibur Rahman said he came under attack  around 7pm when he was leaving his home after iftar. Police later recovered the body.  Badiul Alam Badrul, convener of the Krishak Dal’s north district unit, said Nasir was involved had a longstanding dispute with some local people over soil trading in the area. Police launched a drive to arrest those involved in the killing. The body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for an autopsy, the OC added. 

A local leader of the BNP was killed in a clash between  two factions of the party in Natuda union, over dominance in  Chuadanga’s Damurhuda upazila on Wednesday night. The deceased was identified as Sultan, 45, son of the late Afsar Ali, resident of Khalisha Para area of Natuda union and was serving as the joint secretary of BNP Ward No. 1 (covering Gachiar Para and Khalisha Para). According to the case statement, on October 23, two groups of BNP clashed over establishing supremacy and previous enmity, injuring around five to six people from both groups. Sultan sustained serious injuries during the clash and was initially taken to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, from where he was referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Earlier, on October 28, Palash filed the case against five individuals. 3 CU students injured in clash with Jubo League activists Police have arrested an accused Sohrab,60, son of Bharsa Ali from Gachiar Para village, listed in the case filed in connection with the incident. While most of the injured have recovered and returned home, Sultan remained under treatment for eight days at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he passed away on Wednesday night. Damurhuda Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Humayun Kabir confirmed the matter. Operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects, said the OC.
