Five killed, 20 injured in head-on collision of two buses in Faridpur: Police
A head-on collision between two buses left five people dead and at least 20 injured in Mallikpur Sadar Upazila of Faridpur early Tuesday, police said.
The crash involved two buses, one belonging to 'Jhinaidah Paribahan' coming from Dhaka to Jhinaidah, and the other from 'Green Express' heading to Dhaka from Jhenaidah.
According to highway police, at least 15 of the injured have been admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. However, the identities of the deceased and injured are yet to be confirmed.

Highway police and fire service personnel have jointly conducted rescue operations at the scene, said Karimpur Highway Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Salauddin Chowdhury.
The buses involved in the accident have been seized and brought to the Karimpur Highway Police Station, he added.

17 die as bus plunges into pond in Jhalakathi; 35 injured
At least 17 people including seven children and five women were killed and 35 others injured when a bus plunged into a roadside pond at Chhatrakanda in Sadar upazila of Jhalakathi district on Saturday.
Thirteen of the deceased were identified as Tariq, 55, Salam Molla, 50, Shahin Molla, 30, Abdullah, 7, Sumaiya, 5, Rahima, 60, Abul Kalam Hawlader, 50, Ripa Moni, 3, Irene, 22, of Rajpur upazila, and Nayan, 16, Khushbu, 19, Khadija, 55, and Rabeya, 55, of Bhandaria while the identities of the others could not be known immediately.The Barishal-bound bus from Bhandaria in Pirojpur district carrying around 70 passengers fell into the pond near Union Parishad office around 9:55 am, leaving 17 people dead and 35 others injured, said Sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station Shakhawat Hossain.Read: 57 die, 34 missing in waterway accidents in 6 months: SCRF
Azad Hossain, a passenger who was coming with his family in the bus, said, “The bus driver was not driving properly and was repeatedly talking with the helper, conductor and passengers. The moment the bus made a turn on the side of the road, he turned the steering to the right and the bus lost control and overturned and fell into the pond.”Nasir Uddin Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Jhalakathi Police Station, said the bus lost control and overturned in a pond on the side of the road and due to this, many passengers could not get out of the bus easily and drowned.According to the police, there were no injury marks on the dead bodies in the “suratehal” report (inquest) and they died due to drowning. Dr Baishakhi Baral, who is in charge of the emergency department at Jhalokati Sadar Hospital, confirmed the matter.

Jhalakathi Superintendent of Police Mohammad Afrozul Haque Tutul said the DIG of the police department has announced to give Tk 1 lakh for the burial and cremation of the deceased and it has been sent to the families of the deceased. He added that no one is interested in filing a case so far. However, if no one complains on behalf of the families of the victims, the police will file a case. Efforts are on to arrest the driver, contractor and helpers of the bus.

Death toll of Bangladeshi pilgrims who died in Saudi bus accident rises to 18
At least 18 Bangladeshi pilgrims were killed and 16 others were injured in an accident that killed 24 omrah hajj pilgrims and injured around 23 people in the southwestern region of Saudi Arabia on Monday, said a Foreign Ministry official on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Shahidul Islam, son of Shariat Ulla in Senbagh from Noakhali district, Mamun Mia, son of Abdul Awal and Russel Molla of Muradnagar in Cumilla district, Mohammad Helal of Noakhali district, Sabuj Hossain of Laxmipur district, Md Asif and Shafatul Islam of Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar district, Md Imam Hossain Rony, son of Abdul Latif in Gazipur district, Ruk Mia, son of Kalu Mia of Chandpur district, Gias Hamid of Debidwar in Cumilla district, Mohammad Nazrul Islam, son of Kawsar Mia and Rony, son of Iskandar of Jashore district and Mohammad Hossain of Cox’s Bazar district, Ruhul Amin, Khairul Islam, Tushar Mazumder, Miraz Hossain, Sakib, son of Abdul Awal and Rana Mia.
Previously it was confirmed that 13 Bangladeshis were killed. Later another five Bangladeshi nationals have been identified among the 24 omrah pilgrims who died in the crash, according to information provided by the foreign ministry.
At least 16 Bangladeshi nationals are receiving medical treatments in four different hospitals across the country.
The bus was carrying 47 omrah hajj pilgrims to Makkah and among them thirty-five passengers were Bangladeshi nationals.
The accident occurred in Saudi Arabia’s Asir province - around 650 km away from Jeddah - at around 4:00 PM on Monday.
According to media reports, the bus collided with a bridge following a brake failure, overturned and burst into flames.
Hospital authorities said that it is very difficult to determine the nationality due to the burning and disfiguring of the bodies.
Two officers of the Bangladesh Consulate General, Jeddah visited the area immediately after the incident and are trying to identify the victims and contact their family members in Bangladesh, according to a press release sent from Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended its heartfelt condolences to the relatives of those who have lost their lives in this tragic accident and remains connected with the wounded and hospitalized and is working for the early repatriation of the dead.
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on Wednesday said the number of Bangladeshi nationals who died in the crash could rise as many of the wounded -- who are receiving medical treatment in different hospitals across the country -- are in critical condition.
He hoped that the bodies of the Bangladeshi nationals would be returned as soon as possible.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday expressed deep shock and sorrow at the horrific bus crash that killed around 24 omrah hajj pilgrims and injured around 23 people in the southwestern region of Saudi Arabia on Monday.
In a condolence message, she prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed souls and quick recovery of the injured persons.
She asked the Foreign Ministry officials and the Saudi Mission personnel to take necessary actions for recovering the bodies of Bangladeshi nationals and ensure proper treatment for the injured.

Bus falls into ditch in Madaripur: Death toll now 19
The death toll from a tragic road accident in Madaripur’s Shibchar upazila rose to 19 this noon (March 19, 2023), with three more succumbing to their injuries.
Two of the injured died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) from Madaripur, said Md Bachhu Miah, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost.
He said five more injured were admitted at the hospital and are undergoing treatment.
Another injured died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Madaripur.

Earlier in the morning, a Dhaka-bound bus of Emad Paribahan from Khulna fell into a roadside ditch in Madaripur’s Shibchar upazila.
Abu Nayeem Md Mofazzal Huq, officer-in-charge of Shibchar Highway Police Station, said the incident occurred around 8 am when the bus fell into a roadside ditch after its driver lost control over the wheel on the approach road of Padma Bridge, in Simana area under Kathalbari union of Shibchar upazila, leaving 14 people including the bus driver dead on the spot.
Two people breathed their last on the way to the hospital, he said.
The OC informed that 20 injured people have so far been rescued from the wreckage.
Members of fire service and civil defence and police, accompanied by locals, have been conducting the rescue operation, he said.
The identities of the dead could not be known immediately, the OC said. Speeding might have caused the accident that led to the casualties, he added.

Bus crash on highway in Croatia kills at least 12 people
A Poland-registered bus carrying pilgrims to a shrine in Bosnia skidded from a highway in northern Croatia early Saturday, killing at least 12 people and injuring several others, police and officials said.
Croatian police said on Twitter that “in the skidding of a bus with Polish license plates, according to initial information from the field, 11 people died and several were injured." Officials said one more passenger died later in a hospital and that the bus was carrying 43 people.
Croatia’s state HRT television reported that about 30 people were injured, many seriously. It said the most likely cause of the crash was the driver falling asleep.
The broadcaster showed video of a smashed blue bus in a ditch next to the highway. The bus was traveling in the direction of Zagreb, Croatia's capital.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said the bus was taking pilgrims to the Catholic shrine in Medjugorje, a town in southern Bosnia. The shrine is Europe’s third-most popular pilgrimage destination after Lourdes and Fatima, although the Vatican has not verified any of the reported miracles that witnesses claimed to have seen there.
“This morning, I spoke about the details of the tragedy with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, who assured the full support of Croatian medical services," Morawiecki said on Facebook. "I recommended our consular services to organize a support organization for the families of accident participants."

Croatian Interior Minister Davor Bozinic said the bus originated from “a place near Warsaw" and that “according to some information," it was carrying pilgrims to Medjugorje.
The accident happened at 5:40 a.m. local time (3:40 a.m. GMT) some 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Zagreb, on the A-4 highway, which is busy during the peak of the tourist season.
Rescue teams were sent to the location of the accident that an investigation what caused the accident was ongoing, Croatian media reported.

Mother, son killed as bus hits them on Sylhet-Bholaganj highway
A woman and her son were killed as a bus mowed them down on the Sylhet-Bholaganj highway in Companiganj upazila, Sylhet, Thursday, police said.
Dulvi Begum, 40, and her son Siddikur Rahman, 12, of the upazila were going to Meghergaon of Sadar upazila.
The accident occurred around 12pm near Baharghat as a bus of Shadapathor Poribohon hit the mother and son as they were crossing the road, leaving Dulvi and her son critically injured, Md Shafiqul Islam Khan, in-charge of Salutikor Police Investigation Centre, said.

Police rushed them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where they were declared dead upon arrival.
The bodies were sent to the hospital morgue for autopsies, Shafiqul said.

20 injured as bus overturns at Jatrabari
At least 20 people sustained injuries after a commuter bus overturned in the Bishwaroad area of Jatrabari in Dhaka on Friday morning.
The accident occurred around 6.30am when the driver lost control of the speeding bus, belonging to Bandhan Paribahan, moments after taking a turn at the busy Bishwaroad intersection, said Monir Hossain, one of the injured passengers.

The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), and 18 of them are being treated at the emergency department, said Bacchu Mia, inspector in-charge of DMCH police outpost.
“At least three of the injured are in a critical condition,” he said, quoting the duty doctor.
Some of the injured have been identified as Omar Ali, 30, Monir Hossain, 35, Md Shafique, 32, Shahnaz Begum, 35, Md Rafi, 7, Md Jony, 25, and Munny Akter.

13 killed in India bus accident
At least 13 people died after a commuter bus fell off a bridge into a river in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh on Monday, police said. More than 40 people, including a driver and a conductor, were on board the bus when it veered off the road and plunged into the Narmada river after breaching the railing of the bridge at Khalghat in Dhar district, some 260 kms from state capital Bhopal.
"The accident occurred when the driver lost control of the bus amid light showers. The government-owned bus was on its way to the neighbouring state of Maharashtra," a police officer told the local media.
"Some 13 bodies have been fished out of the river, while we could manage to save 15 lives. The rescue operation is on," he said.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took to Twitter to express grief over the loss of lives in the accident. "Instructions have been given to make arrangements for proper treatment of the injured," he wrote.

30 students injured in Bengal bus accident
As many as 30 students were injured after their school bus veered off the road and fell into a roadside ditch in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal's on Saturday, police said.
The accident occurred at Lakkhipur in the English Bazar area of the state's Malda district around 2.30pm.
"The bus was ferrying 70 students from government-owned Kendriya Vidyalaya to their homes when the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the accident," Malda police chief Pradeep Yadav told the media.

26 killed in India bus accident
At least 26 people have been killed when a bus carrying pilgrims veered off a mountainous road and fell into a deep gorge in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, officials said Monday.
The accident occurred late on Sunday evening in the state's Uttarakashi district.
"The bus was carrying 30 pilgrims from the central state of Madhya Pradesh to the holy town of Yamunotri in Uttarakhand when it plunged into the 250-metre-deep gorge," a senior police officer said.

Some 26 bodies have been recovered from the accident site so far, according to a local disaster management official.
"The bodies are being sent to Dehradun from where they will be sent to Madhya Pradesh. The body of the bus helper has been kept at the local community health centre," district disaster management officer Devendra Patwal told the media.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a compensation of Rs two lakh each to the families of those killed in the bus accident and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
"A probe has been ordered into the accident," the police officer said.
