More bodies were found Friday following an avalanche that buried vehicles outside a highway tunnel in Tibet, raising the death toll to 28, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported. Images from the scene at the exit of the tunnel connecting the city of Nyingchi in Tibet’s southwest with an outlying county showed about half a dozen backhoes digging through deep snow. Reports said around 1,000 rescuers had joined the effort. Tons of snow and ice collapsed onto the mouth of the tunnel on Tuesday evening, trapping drivers in their vehicles. Nyingchi lies at an elevation of nearly 10,000 feet (3,048 meters), about a five-hour drive from the regional capital, Lhasa, along a highway that opened in 2018.  

At least eight people were killed and six others rescued in critical condition after part of a glacier collapsed, triggering an avalanche in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, officials said Saturday. According to officials, 384 others, mostly belonging to India's Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF), have been rescued safely. The avalanche took place Friday late afternoon during heavy snowfall in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. "384 BRO persons moved to safety. Eight snow trapped bodies recovered from the two BRO Camps. Six critically injured being evacuated. Air sorties are being attempted to assist medical evacuation. Rescue operations by army continue unabated," reads a statement issued by Indian army. In February, a similar disaster led to a massive avalanche followed by floods, killing at least 80 people in the area.  

Aided by sniffer dogs, Turkish rescue workers scanned an avalanche field in eastern Turkey on Thursday, searching for a final missing person after two avalanches that killed dozens, Turkish news agencies reported.
