Journalism's goal is to uphold human rights, address social issues: Quader Gani
Secretary General of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Quader Gani Chowdhury on Sunday said that journalism is a noble profession and the main goal of this is to work for the establishment of human rights.
"A true journalist enters this profession not for personal gain, but out of a deep sense of love and commitment to public service," he said while speaking at an event marking the 48th anniversary of the BFUJ union in Jashore.
He said that only journalists can save journalism, and for this, unity is essential. Journalism requires truthfulness, fairness, honesty, independence and accountability, Quader Gani said.

The journalist leader said that the role of a journalist is to portray the true picture of society, which is why the media is referred to as the mirror of society and journalists are called the watchdogs of society.
“The image of society is reflected in this mirror. A journalist must always speak out against injustice, irregularities, oppression, exploitation, and the deprivation of rights. They must work fearlessly and relentlessly, without paying attention to flattery,” he added.
He also pointed out exceptions to this, noting that the respected world of journalism in Bangladesh is being tarnished by the actions of some incompetent and unelected people.
Many join the profession not for noble purposes, but out of greed and a desire to gain influence in society. These people pose as journalists for fake news outlets, engaging in unethical practices.

“They must be stopped, or else the public will lose trust in journalists,” added Gani.
