Canals in Dhaka to be excavated, cleaned to curb waterlogging, dengue: DNCC Administrator
Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation Safiqul Islam Khan on Monday said the clogged and filled-up canals in the capital will be excavated and cleaned promptly to control waterlogging and dengue ahead of the upcoming rainy season.
The DNCC administrator made the remark after inspecting the Paris Canal in Mirpur area.
There is also a plan to gradually construct walkways along both banks of the canals to protect the environment while enhancing civic amenities, he said.
“Constructive criticism and suggestions from journalists and citizens will help make our work more dynamic,” he added.
Replying to a question, the administrator said canals that have long remained under illegal occupation would be freed through discussions with stakeholders and through legal action, if necessary.
During the visit, State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque said residents of the area suffer immensely whenever it rains.
“If the canals are properly cleaned and required depth maintained, the waterlogging problem will be reduced significantly,” he said.

Social awareness, stronger monitoring needed to curb mosquito menace: DNCC administrator
Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation Md Shafiqul Islam Khan on Thursday stressed the need for social awareness and strengthened monitoring to curb the mosquito menace in the city.
“Mosquito control cannot be ensured only by spraying insecticides. To effectively control mosquitoes, social awareness and monitoring must be strengthened,” he said while speaking at an introductory and views-exchange meeting with officials and employees of DNCC Zones 1, 6, 7 and 8 at Uttara Sector-6 Community Centre in the capital .

He also said that all ongoing tender works of the city corporation must be completed within the stipulated time and any irregularities in the tender process in the past will be reviewed and all allegations will be properly investigated.
He also said no illegal work would be allowed in the city corporation.
“I have come here to work. People should see that we are trying to work for the city,” he added.
Urging officials and employees to remain attentive to their duties, the administrator said everyone must attend their workplace on time.

Battery-run rickshaws won’t be allowed on Dhaka's main roads: DNCC Administrator
No battery-run rickshaws will be allowed to operate on the main roads of Dhaka city, said Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Ejaz on Tuesday.
The approved standard model auto-rickshaws will be allowed to run in the alleys of Dhaka city, he said while speaking at a meeting on “Update on progress and future actions regarding the Standard Model and Prototype Development of Battery-Powered Rickshaws (E-Rickshaws)," organised by DNCC.
Besides, a high level committee will be formed soon to prepare a standard model and regulatory framework for e-rickshaws, he said.

During the meeting, BUET's BIPRC (Bangladesh Integrated Public and Road Communication) e-bike project proposed a type-approval and registration process for a newly standardised, low-speed three-wheel e-rickshaw model.
Manufacturers were urged to develop prototypes based on the proposal.
