Chattogram: Ex-civil surgeon lands in jail in corruption case
The former Civil Surgeon of Chattogram on Sunday was sent to jail by a court in a case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on account of swindling money Tk 9.15 crore.
The former civil surgeon and also caretaker of Chattogram General Hospital is Dr Sarfaraz Khan Chowdhury.
The court of Chattogram Metropolitan Session Judge and Special Judge Dr Begum Jebunnesa passed the order after rejecting a bail petition placed by the accused in person before the court, said Md Fakhruddin Chowdhury, public prosecutor of the court.
Referring to the case statement, PP Fakhruddin said the accused in the case bought an MRI machine for the General Hospital for over Tk 6.15 crore, though its market price was only Tk 2 crore.
Similarly, they also purchased four other colour Doppler machines for Tk 2.6 crore against a market price of only Tk 98 lakh.

The accused is suspected of pocketing the difference in both cases.
Mentionable, Mohammad Sirajul Haque, assistant director of the ACC in Chattogram integrated office -1 filed the case against seven people including the former civil surgeon on charge of embezzling Tk 9.15 crore in the name of purchasing medical accessories on November 25, 2019.
The others accused in the case are the general hospital’s physicians Dr Md Abdur Rob, Dr Md Moinuddin Majumdar, Dr Bijon Kumar Nath, accessories supply organization’s owner Md Jaher Uddin Sarkar, M/S Ahmad Enterprise’s ower Munsi Faruk Ahmed and ASL Managing Director and CEO Aftab Ahmed.

Hijab Row: Head teacher Dharani Kanta lands in jail in case filed by Amodini Pal
A court here on Sunday sent Dharani Kanta Barman, head teacher of the Daul Barbakpur High School in Naogaon’s Mahadebpur that shot to the nation's attention over a contrived hijab row, to jail after he was taken into custody in a case filed by assistant head teacher Amodini Pal.
Naogaon Senior Judicial Cognizance Court-3 Judge Tajul Islam passed the order after accused Dharani Kanta appealed for bail appearing before the court.
Earlier on Thursday night QM Sayeed Tito, and Kazi Samshuzzaman Milon were arrested in the same case.
The arrestees are among about 20-25 people against whom the teacher Amodini Pal filed a case of defamation for falsely implicating her in the incident and hurting religious sentiment by spreading misinformation.

On April 9, Amodini Pal, assistant headmistress of Daul Barbakpur High School, filed a against these people, including the headmaster of the school Dharani Kant Barman, president of the school managing committee Mahmudul Hasan Sumon and Salauddin Ahmed, a resident of Gaherpur village in Porsha upazila.
Earlier on April 10, Dharani kanta Barman filed a general diary at the same police station accusing 150 anonymous people for spreading rumors about a teacher beating up students for wearing hijab in school and vandalising school property.
That was in relation to an incident from April 6, when Amodini Pal, assistant headmistress of the school allegedly caned 16-18 students of the 8th, 9th and 10th classes for not wearing school uniforms.
Later, it was distorted into an issue over hijab, as some of the girls who got punished were wearing their hijab. But even male students were punished on the day, by a different teacher.
On April 11, a three member administrative probe body formed in this regard submitted a report to Mohadebpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mizanur Rahman.

The committee did not find proof of students being punished for wearing hijab, rather it said Amodini Pal and Badiul Alam punished some students for not wearing school dress and there were male students and Hindu students among them.
