IGP zero tolerance against extortion, orders strict action nationwide
India’s West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested prime accused Faisal Karim Masud, 37, and his associate Alamgir Hossain in the murder of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi from the border area of Bongaon in West Bengal.
IGP Hossain Fakir said police have adopted a zero-tolerance policy against extortion and action will be taken against extortionists regardless of their political affiliation.
He said block raids have already been conducted against terrorists, extortionists and drug traders and such drives are ongoing.
Referring to the trust deficit that developed between police and public in the past, he said efforts must be made to restore public confidence.
“To achieve this, we want to establish every district headquarters police station (sadar police station) as a ‘zero complaint thana’,” he said, adding that a circle officer will continuously monitor the overall activities of those police stations.
Police aim to provide services in such a way that people visiting police stations can return with satisfaction and without any complaints against police, he added.
The IGP also said police reaction time will be reduced to the minimum level and that officers will immediately visit the scene and take necessary legal steps following any incident.
He said effective measures will be taken to prevent violence against women including rape.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will also be further modernised to improve the quality of investigations and ensure speedy completion of probes so that the real offenders can be brought to justice.
With Eid-ul-Fitr approaching, the IGP said measures have already been taken to ensure the safe travel of homebound people on roads, highways, waterways and railways.
He said robbery, extortion and piracy will be prevented on highways.
District police have been instructed to assist Highway Police while Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is also performing duties on highways.
Security has been strengthened at major markets across the country and effective steps have been taken to prevent theft and snatching, he added.
The IGP also noted that unrest often emerges in the garment sector over wages and allowances ahead of Eid which can affect the law and order situation.
He said initiatives have been taken to address such issues through coordination with labour leaders, factory owners and organisations including BGMEA and BKMEA, alongside identifying vulnerable garment factories.
He also said police vigilance and monitoring will remain in place to prevent the rise of extremist militants.

Inqilab Moncho stages sit-in outside Jamuna, demands UN-led probe into Hadi killing
Inqilab Moncho on Thursday staged a sit-in outside the Chief Adviser’s official residence, Jamuna, demanding an impartial investigation under United Nations supervision into the killing of its spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
The protest began around 5pm with Inqilab Mancha Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber, Fatima Tasnim Zuma, Hadi’s wife and a small number of activists participating in the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Abdullah Al Jaber said they had deliberately limited the number of protesters considering possible security concerns.
“We could have brought many more people if we wanted. We are waiting here with the wife of martyr Osman Hadi until we receive a clear assurance from the Chief Adviser. Without a full guarantee of justice, we will not withdraw from this sit-in,” he said.
Stating their specific demand, Jaber said the programme would continue until the government formally announces a neutral investigation into Hadi’s killing under UN supervision.
Zuma said Inqilab Moncho, along with Hadi’s wife, had taken position in front of Jamuna to press for the UN-monitored probe.
She alleged that while the platform has cooperated with the government, administration and political parties, it has not received similar cooperation in return.
Later in the evening, the Jamaat-backed 11-party alliance candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency Nasiruddin Patwary visited the site and expressed solidarity with Inqilab Moncho.
Hadi was also expected to contest the election from the same constituency.
Hadi was shot by assailants on December 12 at Box Culvert Road under Paltan Model Police Station in Dhaka, a day after the schedule for the 13th national parliamentary election and a referendum was announced.
He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, later to Evercare Hospital, and eventually flown to Singapore. Hadi died on the night of December 18 while undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital.
Following the incident, Jaber filed a case of attempted murder with Paltan Police Station on December 14, which was later converted into a murder case.
