The fire which broke out at Godown slum in Dhaka’s Banani area has been brought under control. The fire started at the slum around 4:05 pm on Sunday and engulfed it, said Talha bin Jasim, station officer of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD). Over 200 illegal shops were evicted during a drive conducted by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in Dhaka’s Banani area on Monday. DNCC extends anti-mosquito drive till Aug 31 During the drive, shops were evicted from both sides of the roads under ward-19, and a total of Tk 2.25 lakh was collected in five cases for illegally occupying footpaths, according to a press release. With the courts closed in Dhaka Wednesday over the death of a Supreme Court lawyer, the judgment in the Banani double rape case has been deferred for the second time in a fortnight. The five men are accused in the rape case of two female university students at a posh hotel in the capital's Banani area in March 2017. Police filed the chargesheet against them in June that year. On October 3, the trial court set October 12 as the judgment day. But the judgment was deferred on that day too as the judge went on sick leave.
