High court issues rule over legality of allocating road, footpath spaces to hawkers
The High Court on Tuesday issued a rule seeking explanation as to why the allocation of spaces on roads and footpaths in the capital for hawkers should not be declared illegal and unlawful.
The HC bench of Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty issued the rule on Tuesday.
The court asked the Local Government Secretary, Law Secretary and two Dhaka city corporations’ administrators and other authorities concerned to respond to the rule.
The rule was issued after Advocate Md Shoib Uzzaman filed a writ petition with the High Court challenging ‘Dhaka Hawker Management Policy-2026’.
Earlier, the government issued ‘Dhaka City Hawker Management Policy-2026’ aiming to ease traffic congestion and ensure uninterrupted movement for pedestrians on footpaths.
