Dhaka court sentences Arav Khan to 10 years' jail in arms case
A Dhaka court on Tuesday (May 09, 2023) sentenced Mohammad Rabiul Islam alias Arav Khan, a Dubai-based gold dealer, to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment in an arms case filed in January 2015.
Judge Murshid Ahmed of Dhaka Metro Special Tribunal-14 passed the order this noon, in absence of Arav Khan.
In addition to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, Arav Khan was sentenced to a fine of Tk 10,000, in default of which he will have to serve another three months' imprisonment.
Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) AKM Salahuddin confirmed the development.

Earlier, on March 28, the court heard the testimonies of 10, out of 20, witnesses. Arav Khan could not claim his innocence as he was absconding.
According to the prosecution, Arav Khan was arrested in January 2015, with a loaded revolver from Dhaka's Moghbazar area as he went to his father-in-law Sekendar Ali’s house to collect money at gunpoint.
On the same day, Sujan Kumar Kundu, the then Sub-inspector of DB West's Car Theft Prevention and Rescue Team, filed a case against Arav Khan with Ramna Model Police Station under arms act.
DB Police Sub-inspector Sheikh Hasan Mohammad Mostafa Sarwar, also the investigating officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet against Arav Khan to the court on March 1, 2015. The tribunal framed charges against him on May 10.

He was granted bail in the case on March 14, 2018. The court issued an arrest warrant against Arav Khan on October 24, 2018 declaring him as "fugitive".

3 JMB men get life imprisonment in arms case in Lalmonirhat
A Lalmonirhat tribunal on Monday sentenced three members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to life imprisonment and another one to 14 years imprisonment in an arms case.
Lalmonirhat Special Tribunal Judge Mizanur Rahman handed down the punishment.
The lifers are identified as Shafiqul Islam, son of Nazrul islam, Apel Misti, son of Lutfur Rahman and Mokhlesur Rahman, son of Hafizur Rahman of Kaliganj upazila.

The man who got 14 years in jail is identified as Tafizul Islam, son of Mojibur Rahman of Patgram upazila.
According to the prosecution, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13 arrested four JMB men while they were holding a clandestine meeting on August 2, 2018.
The elite force also seized arms and bullets from their possession.

Life term for GK Shamim, 7 others in arms case
A Dhaka court today sentenced eight people, including GK Shamim – a disgraced contractor who gained infamy during the “casino raids” of late 2019, to life term imprisonment in an arms case.
The other seven are all GK Shamim’s bodyguards: Md Zahidul Islam, Md Shahidul Islam, Md Kamal Hossain, Md Shamsad Hossain, Md Aminul Islam, Md Delwar Hossain, and Md Murad Hossain.
Third Additional Metropolitan Session Court Judge Sheikh Samidul Islam passed the judgment.

They were brought to the court from jail in the morning.
GK Shamim, who was known as an influential contractor of Sabujbagh, Basabo and Motijheel areas of the capital, was arrested on September 20, 2019.
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) seized illegal firearms and fixed deposit receipts worth Tk 165 crore, Tk 1.8 crore in cash and foreign currencies from his house and office at Niketan.

The elite force filed three cases – one under narcotics control, one under money-laundering prevention and the other under arms act – against Shamim with Gulshan Police Station on September 21.
In October 2019, Rab filed a charge sheet against the accused in the arms case.
The official trial proceeding in the case began on February 28, after the court framed charges against the eight accused rejecting an appeal for acquittal.

GK Shamim: Court sets Sept 25 for verdict in arms case
A Dhaka court on Sunday set September 25 to pronounce its verdict in a case filed under the Arms Act against eight people, including GK Shamim a disgraced government contractor who gained infamy during the 'casino raids' of late 2019.
Third Additional Metropolitan Session Court Judge Sheikh Samidul Islam fixed the date after hearing the arguments in this case.
Assistant Public Prosecutor of the case, Salahuddin Howladar said the court recorded statements of ten of the 19 witnesses named in the case.

Narayanganj 7-murder: Nur Hossain gets life term in arms case
A Narayanganj court on Thursday sentenced Nur Hossain, death row convict in Narayanganj seven-murder case, to life imprisonment in an arms case.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Sabina Yasmin pronounced the judgment in presence of Nur, a former Narayanganj city councillor, said state counsel additional public prosecutor Md Salahuddin Sweet.
On May 15, 2014, law enforcers conducted drive at Nur’s house in Shimrail area of Siddhirganj upazila and seized a foreign revolver, eight rounds of bullet and eight shotgun shells. Later, a case was filed at Siddhirganj police station under the Arms Act in this regard.

The court sentenced Nur Hossain to life term rigorous imprisonment under two sections of the act.
On August 22, 2017, the High Court upheld the death sentence of 15 convicts, including Nur and three Rapid Action Battalion officials, and commuted the penalty of 11 others to life term jail in two cases filed over the seven-murder.
On April 27, 2014, Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah.
Also, senior lawyer at the District Judge’s Court Chandan Kumar Sarkar and his driver were abducted on their way to the capital.
Three days after the incident, the bodies of six of them, including Nazrul and Chandan, were recovered from the River Shitalakhya.
The following day, the body of Nazrul’s car driver Jahangir was recovered from the river.
Later, Selina Islam Beauty, the widow of Nazrul, filed a case against six people while Chandan’s son-in-law filed the other case.

SC suspends bail order by HC to Regent’s Shahed in arms case
The Appellate Division on Sunday suspended the bail order by the High Court to Regent Group chairman Mohammad Shahed in an arms case, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The Appellate Division Chamber Justice M Enayetur Rahim suspended the bail order following the state's petition.

The court fixed August 1 for the hearing of the petition filed by the state.
Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath and Deputy Attorney General Md Bashir Ullah represented the state in the court while senior lawyer SM Shahjahan appeared for Shahed.
Earlier in the day, a Dhaka court framed charges against Shahed with five others, including former director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Abul Kalam Azad, in a case over Regent Hospital’s fake Covid test report scam.
Regent Group Chairman Shahed was sentenced to life imprisonment in arms cases on September 28 in 2020 by the lower court.
The court also jailed him for seven years under section 19 (F) of the same case.
Later, Shahed sought bail by appealing to the High Court against the sentence. The High Court granted him bail on June 7.
On July 6, 2020, Rab raided the Uttara and Mirpur branches of Regent Hospital. During the operation, fake Covid test reports, and various irregularities including collection of money from patients in the name of Covid treatment were unveiled.

The next day, a case was filed against 17 people at Uttara West Police Station.
On July 15, from the border area of Satkhira, Regent Group and Regent Hospital Chairman Shahed was arrested by RAB. Shahed has been in jail since then.
More than 36 cases have been filed against Shahed on allegations of different irregularities.

DGHS driver gets 30 years in arms case
A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced Abdul Malek, a driver of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), to 30 years’ imprisonment in an arms case -- 15 years each under two sections of the relevant act.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-3 Md Rabiul Alam pronounced the judgement in the morning.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-3 fixed September 20 for delivering its judgment on September 13 following the conclusion of arguments by both sides.
On March 11, the court framed charges against him in the case.
Abdul Malek pleaded not guilty and demanded justice when Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayesh framed charges against him.
On January 11, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) submitted a chargesheet in the case.
Rab members arrested Malek from Turag thana area in the city on September 20, 2020 on charge of extortion and involvement in illegal firearms trade.

Tipped off, a Rab-1 battalion conducted a drive at a 7-storey building at Kamarpara under Turag police station and arrested him.
One foreign-made pistol, one magazine, five bullets, fake currency worth around Tk1.50 lakh, one laptop and one mobile phone were recovered from his possession.
He was allegedly involved in many illegal activities and made huge wealth by transferring employees of different departments through lobbying.

A Dhaka court on Monday fixed September 20 for delivering its judgment in an arms case against Abdul Malek , a driver of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
