Storms kill woman, injure at least two in Germany
A woman was killed and at least two others were injured as severe storms swept across parts of Germany overnight, causing widespread damage.
In Waldorf, in the southwestern state of Rhineland-Palatinate, a 58-year-old woman died after a tree fell on her, the German news agency dpa reported Thursday. Another woman, 47, was seriously injured.
The two women were walking together when a storm struck and they took shelter under a covered seating area. A tree was uprooted by strong winds and fell onto the structure, hitting both women. The 58-year-old died at the scene, while the other woman was taken to a hospital, police said.
A tornado also hit the town of Fürstenwalde, about 78 kilometres southeast of Berlin. Several roofs were damaged and trees fell onto cars. One person was injured, according to dpa.
In Höhr-Grenzhausen in western Germany, strong winds tore parts of walls and building facades from at least two homes. Flying debris and uprooted trees caused further damage.
The storm also caused a widespread power outage in the area. Strong winds overturned a truck on the A61 highway.
Emergency services in the states of Hesse, Thuringia and Bavaria also received numerous calls related to the bad weather overnight.
In Kronach, Bavaria, organisers partially evacuated a village festival as the storms intensified. Around 3,500 people were asked to leave the outdoor area late Wednesday, police said. They were able to continue the event inside beer halls.
In Wetzlar, Hesse, storms damaged about 60 homes, according to the local fire department. Some pieces of roofing were blown up to 100 metres away, dpa reported.
The German Weather Service warned that more severe storms could hit parts of the country later Thursday, particularly Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria in southern Germany.
