Ex-DIG prison Bazlur Rashid denied bail
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has denied bail to the suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons Bazlur Rashid in connection with a corruption case.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice Burhanuddin passed the order on Monday.
Suspended DIG Bazlur Rashid granted HC bail
Advocate Khurshid Alam stood for the Anti-Corruption Committee (ACC) while advocate SM Rezaul Karim moved for the petitioner.
Earlier, Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 on 23 October 2022, had sentenced him to five years imprisonment and fined Tk5,00,000 in the case filed for amassing assets worth Tk3.14 crore.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Md Salauddin filed the case against him on Oct 20, 2019.
Later, he was arrested the same day.

Ex-Sylhet DIG (Prison) gets 8 years jail
A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced Partha Gopal Banik, suspended deputy inspector general (prisons) of Sylhet division, to eight years imprisonment in a case filed on bribery and money laundering charges.
Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 pronounced the judgment.The court fined him Tk 50,000, in default, to suffer three months more rigorous imprisonment.
On September 19 last year, the court sent Partha Gopal Banik to jail in the case when he surrendered before the court.

On June 17, Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 granted bail to Partha Gopal. Later, the Anti- Corruption Commission submitted a petition seeking cancellation of the bail order which was granted later.
On January 25, 2021, the HC dismissed a review appeal filed by Partha seeking exemption from the graft charges in a case filed after the recovery of Tk 80 lakh from his residence during a drive in 2019.

On July 28, 2019, ACC seized Tk 80 lakh from his house in the city’s Dhanmondi area after interrogating him at the ACC headquarters over corruption.

Cumilla incident: DIG says offenders to be hunted down
Those who were involved in the Cumilla incident will be hunted down, said Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Chattogram Range Anwar Hossain.
“Efforts are on to identify those involved in desecration of the holy Quran after checking the close circuit camera (CCTV) footage and the offenders will be hunted down,” said DIG Anwar while visiting the spot, Nanuar Dighirparh, in the morning.
Meanwhile, additional security measures have been taken to avert any untoward incident, he said, adding, “The [law and order] situation in the area is still calm.”
Already, four platoons of BGB members have been deployed and police and Rab are patrolling the area, he added.
Two separate probe bodies—one by the local administration and another by the district police—will be formed to look into the incident.

Meanwhile, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has warned that those involved in the Cumilla incident will be brought to justice and no offender will be spared.
“It’s an act of an evil communal force, and those who attack Hindu temples won’t be spared either, even if they belong to any party,” Obaidul Quader said while addressing the Mahastami (8th day) of Durga Puja at KIB premises in the capital on Wednesday evening.
He said a united resistance has to be built against those who want to destroy the communal harmony in the country before the national election.
Besides, State Minister for Religious Affairs Md Faridul Haque Khan has urged the people of the country to exercise restraint and not to take law into their own hands over the desecration of the holy Quran in Cumilla.

“Don’t take law into your own hands. Everyone should maintain religious harmony and peace,” he said in an emergency announcement on Wednesday evening. “We’re closely monitoring the situation in Cumilla. The local administration has been instructed to investigate what really happened [there].” he said.
“Anyone involved in destroying religious harmony [in the country] must be brought under the ambit of law and arrangements be made to give proper punishment,” the state minister added.

Money laundering: Sylhet DIG(Prison) Partha Gopal lands in jail
A court here on Sunday sent Partha Gopal Banik, the suspended deputy inspector general (prisons) of Sylhet division, to jail in a money laundering case.
Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 passed the order when Partha Gopal surrendered before the court in the case.
On June 17, Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 granted bail to Partha Gopal. Later, the Anti- Corruption Commission submitted a petition seeking cancellation of the bail order which was granted later.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim asked him to surrender before the court within September 20.
On January 25, 2021, the HC dismissed a review appeal filed by Partha seeking exemption from the graft charges in a case filed after the recovery of Tk 80 lakh from his residence during a drive in 2019.
Partha filed the review petition with the HC after his appeal was rejected by a subordinate court on November 4.
On July 28, 2019, ACC seized Tk 80 lakh from his house in the city’s Dhanmondi area after interrogating him at the ACC headquarters over corruption .
