2 children drown in Thakurgaon
Two children drowned in a pond at Nuntor village in Thakurgaon’s Ranisankail upazila early Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Md Siam, 10, son of Makbul Hossain, and Al Amin, 12, son of Muktar Hossain.
According to their family, one of them fell into the pond while trying to pick up his shoe, while the other fell while trying to save him.
On information, a firefighting unit rushed in and recovered the bodies from the pond, said Gulfamul Islam Mandal, officer-in-charge of Ranisankail Police Station.

19 women drowned as boat capsizes in Pakistan's Indus River: media
At least 19 women were killed on Monday when a boat capsized in the Indus River near Machka area of Sadiqabad city in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province, local media reported.
According to media, around 60 to 70 passengers were on board. They were part of a marriage procession that was heading towards Machka from a nearby area.

At least 35 people were rescued by the locals, police told media.
The search operation for the people who are still missing is underway.

Three kids drown in Dinajpur, Kurigram
Three children drowned in Dinajpur and Kurigram districts on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In Dinajpur, two minors drowned in the Atrai River.
The deceased are Jitu 12, daughter of Jewel of Fakirganj of Nilphamari and Bhulanath, son of Bhupati Roy of Kachharipara village under Birganj upazila.
Khansama fire service station officer Talha Bin Jasim said Jitu drowned in the river while he was bathing Wednesday afternoon.
On information, firefighters conducted a drive and recovered the body of the teenage girl.
Jitu came to her maternal grandfather's house on Eid vacation, he added.

Earlier in the day, fishermen recovered the body of Bhulanath, who went missing in the Atrai river at Kalarghat on Tuesday.
He also came to his maternal grandfather's house.
In Kurigram, a child drowned in a hole filled with water which was dug for installing a tube well in Ulipur upazila of the district on Wednesday morning.
Relatives said Raihan Mia, son of Rezaul Islam, of Tabakpur union under the upazila, came to his maternal grandfather's house on Eid vacation. The child drowned while he was playing.
He was rushed to Ulipur upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead, said Maidul Islam, RMO of the health complex.

Missing tourist’s body fished out of Karnaphuli river
Another tourist’s body was fished out of the Karnaphuli river off the coast of Rangamati’s Kaptai early on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Apurba Saha, 19, a resident of Chattogram city. He went missing while bathing in the river.

Shaheen Alam, senior station officer of Kaptai Fire Service and Civil Defense, said some fishermen spotted Apurba’s body floating in the river in the Sitaghat area around 6am, 15 hours after he drowned.
On information, Kaptai Fire Service personnel fished out the body. The body was later handed to Chandraghona police, said the official.
On Wednesday, four of a six-member tourist group from Chattogram drowned in the Karnaphuli River at noon while bathing.

Fighting against the current, three of them managed to swim ashore and another was rescued by Fire Service members, while two friends went missing.
Later, a four-member naval diving team started searching for the missing tourist in the Sita Ghat area at 4.39 pm and recovered 19-year-old Lokesh Vaidya’s body.

2 kids drown in Chattogram pond
Two children drowned in a pond at Kamar Para in Fatikchhari upazila of Chattogram district on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Meem Akter, 2, daughter of Nazrul and and her cousin Jannatul Nisa, 3, daughter of Faruk.

Local people said Meem and Nisa were playing near a pond adjacent to their house and slipped into the pond.
The mother of one of the children found them floating and took them to a local hospital where doctors declared both dead, said Dr Nabil Chowdhury of Fatikchhari Upazila Health Complex.

Trawler capsize in Dakatia River: 4 detained
Police detained four people after a trawler sank in the Dakatia River off the coast of Chandpur early Monday following a collision with a sand-carrying vessel(bulkhead), leaving five people dead.
The detainees are workers of the bulkhead Md Jabed, Abul Bashar , Md Yunus and Didar, said Md Mujahidul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Chandpur naval police station.
“Four workers of bulkhead MV Iqbal Hossain-1 were held for interrogation and a case will be filed in this regard,” he said.

Four children drown on Eid day
Four children drowned in different ponds in the districts of Khulna and Thakurgaon on Wednesday, the day of Eid. The children, aged between four and 10 years, included two siblings.
In Thakurgaon, the two siblings -- Shimu, 9 and Jannatun, 4, daughters of Shahabul Alam -- allegedly slipped into a pond near their house in Medinisagar village while playing on Wednesday afternoon.

Md Amirul Islam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Haripur Police Station, said the kids were playing near the water body adjacent to their house in Haripur upazila's Medinisagar village.
"When they did not return home after a long time, their family members started searching for them. Later, locals found their bodies floating in the pond," he said.
A few hours later, two children drowned in a pond in Khulna. The duo had gone to take bath in the waterbody in their village Araji Dumuria in Dumuria upazila.
The deceased were identified as Mahim, 10, son of Mofizul Sheikh, and Taha, 7, daughter of Sirajul Sheikh. Both were madrasa students.

According to their relatives, both had gone to take bath in the pond and their bodies were later found floating in the waterbody.
Drowning in Bangladesh
Drowning is the leading cause of death for children under five in Bangladesh.
According to Bangladesh Health and Injury Survey (BHIS), nearly 17,000 children drown annually, an average of around 46 each day, in the country.

A cross-governmental taskforce was established on drowning prevention – led by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with representation from 12 departments. The task force is working to prepare a ‘National Drowning Reduction Strategy’.
According to the WHO’s latest estimates, drowning is the cause of 235,000 deaths every year. Many countries, including Bangladesh, report drowning as a leading cause of childhood mortality, particularly in children under the age of five.

Bus plunges into canal in Sunamganj, one dead, 5 injured
A man in his early 20s died while five others sustained injuries after a passenger bus veered off the road and plunged into a canal in Sunamganj district on Tuesday morning, police said.
The identity of the deceased is yet to be established, cops said.
The accident occurred near Joykolosh mor on Sunamganj-Sylhet Road around 9 am.

According to police and eye-witnesses, the Sunamganj-bound speeding bus fell into the roadside canal after its driver lost control of the vehicle following a collision with a car while overtaking.
Police and fire services personnel rescued the passengers of the ill-fated bus, after being alerted by passersby. While one body was fished out of the canal, the injured are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

Sub-inspector of South Sunamganj police station, Debashish Sutradhar, said efforts are on to identify the deceased passenger.
Fire services staff are also trying to fish out the bus from the canal, he said.
